Road Warriors Spoil Teddy Bear Toss; Upend Blades 5-2
December 11, 2010 - ECHL (ECHL)
Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (16-11-0) saw their annual "Teddy Bear Toss" night spoiled by the Greenville Road Warriors (18-5-2) on Saturday night at Germain Arena, falling 5-2 in front of 6,781 fans. The loss dropped Florida to 2-6-0 on the season against their South Division rival.
The Road Warriors opened the game's scoring with the first of their three power play goals. Julien Brouillette notched his 10th goal of the season at 7:17 while Greenville enjoyed a 5-on-3 power play. The Everblades however responded to even the score at one just a few minutes later.
With Mitch Fadden carrying the puck into the zone on the left side, the league's leading scorer swung behind the Greenville net before skating to the right point where he fed a pass across to David Fischer. Fischer then left a slap shot fly that was deflected past Greenvillle net-minder Dov Grumet-Morris by Ross Carlson. The goal was Carlson's third of the season and sent the teddy bears flying onto the ice from the fans.
With the score tied at one entering the second period, Greenville flexed their muscle scoring twice in the first eight minutes. Mark Voakes gave the Road Warriors a 2-1 lead off a wrist shot from the high slot at 5:07 that beat Everblades goalie Jaroslav Janus low on the stick side. Brouillette then tallied the eventual game-winner at 7:23 when another shot from high slot found its way through traffic and into the net.
Once again though, the Everblades answered back quickly to trim the lead down to one. While on the power play Alex Imbeault ripped a slap shot from the top of the left circle after a nice feed pass from Fadden at 9:46. The goal was Imbeault's 14th of the season and was also assisted by Ethan Graham.
Although the Everblades had chances in the third period, including a breakaway by Drew Larman that was stopped by Grumet-Morris, they couldn't find a way to close the gap. Greenville however extended their lead with their third power play marker of the night at 15:23 when Brandon Wong tapped home a pass at the right post for his sixth goal of the year.
The last gasp came for the Everblades late in the period with a power play opportunity in the final minute, but the Road Warriors would come up with their seventh short-handed goal of the season when Connor Shields slipped a loose puck into the open Everblades net with 42 seconds remaining in the period.
In goal Janus (7-5-0) saw his personal three-game winning streak came to an end after allowing four goals on 29 shots. Grumet-Morris picked up his 10th win of the year stopping 25 of 27 shots.
