Elmira Erupts to Down Devils, 7-3

Trenton Devils News Release
Elmira, NY - After Matt Vokes' game-opening score off a rebound from Dave Leaderer's initial shot gave Trenton a 1-0 lead 39 seconds into the first period, the Jackals steamrolled the Devils by scoring six-unanswered goals to pace a 7-3 Elmira victory Saturday night at First Arena.
Searching for their second win in two nights at Elmira's First Arena, the Devils' only lead of the night lasted 1:36, with Kevin DeVergiglio answering Vokes' third score of the season off a set-up from Josh Brittain and Yannick Tifu at 2:15 of the first period. Even though Andrew Sweetland's eighth goal against Trenton this season at 17:09 moved the Jackals ahead of the Devils 2-1 after one period of play, it wasn't until the second period that Saturday's game got away from Trenton.
Tyler Donati, John Kurtz and Josh Brittain netted markers past Mike Brown in the second period's opening 4:46 to chase Trenton's starting goaltender from the game, staking the home team to a 5-1 lead. With former Jackal Shane Connelly taking over between the pipes for the Devils, Elmira's offensive onslaught continued with Yannick Tifu scoring his first of two goals in the contest before Jeff Prough stopped the bleeding for Trenton by scoring at 10:22. Prough's eighth of the season, assisted by Justin Coutu and Matt Vokes on the power play, didn't change the game's momentum as Yannick Tifu scored his ninth of the season 4:48 after Prough's score to give Elmira a 7-2 lead.
The Devils' defense prevented Elmira from scoring in the third period, and Shane Connelly performed admirably by stopping 21 of 23 shots in relief of Mike Brown, but the Devils could not complete a comeback in back-to-back games. Jeff Prough scored his second power-play tally of the evening to tie Ryan Ginand for the Devils' team-lead with nine goals with 5:11 remaining in the third period, but Trenton didn't get any closer to Elmira as the Jackals went on to win 7-3.
Daren Machesney stopped 21 of 24 shots for the Jackals to earn the win in his Elmira debut to boost the Jackals to 13-6-5-0. By losing for the fourth time in the last five games, Trenton falls to 9-12-1-0. The Devils return home to Sun National Bank Center on Sunday to battle the South Carolina Stingrays at 4:00 p.m. The Devils and Jackals will square off again at Elmira's First Arena next Friday, December 17, at 7:35 p.m.
