Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves lost their fourth straight game on Thursday as they were swept by the Trenton Thunder, 7-2 at Jerry Uht Park. The loss drops the 'Wolves to a season-worst three games under .500 at 15-18.
Trenton struck for four runs in the top of the first inning and were in control throughout. Kevin Russo led off the game with a single and Austin Jackson doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs. A passed ball allowed Russo to score and Jackson to move to third base, giving Trenton a 1-0 lead. Erie starter Josh Rainwater then walked Colin Curtis to put runners on the corners. After retiring the next two batters, Rainwater walked Jose Tabata to load the bases. Carlos Mendoza followed and lined a bases clearing double down the right field line for a 4-0 Thunder lead.
In the top of the second inning, Rainwater tossed three pitches and exited the game with an injury. Reliever Juan Cedeno walked a pair and gave up a single to Edwar Gonzalez, scoring Russo for a 5-0 lead.
The SeaWolves got on the board in the bottom of the second. Justin Justice walked and Max Leon singled to put a pair on for Dusty Ryan. Ryan connected on a base hit, scoring Justice and cutting the Trenton lead down to four runs at 5-1.
In the top of the fourth, Reegie Corona doubled to lead off the inning and Kevin Russo walked against Cedeno. Gonzalez came up again and connected on a single, scoring a pair, making it a 7-1 game in favor of the Thunder.
Erie made it a five-run game in the bottom of the fifth when Jeff Frazier singled and scored on a Deik Scram fielder's choice. That would prove to be the last run of the game, however, as a pair of Trenton relievers held the âWolves scoreless over the final four innings.
Rainwater (2-2) took the loss for Erie going just one inning following the injury.
Four relievers, Anthony Tomey, Matt Righter, Danny Zell and Casey Fien held Trenton scoreless for the final five innings of the game.
Six of the seven runs Trenton scored in the game came with two outs and it marked the first time this season that the SeaWolves have been swept.
