Finan, Baysox Out-Slug Rock Cats

(New Britain, CT) - Ryan Finan went 2-4 with a double and one of three Baysox homeruns to help beat the Rock Cats 9-7 Thursday morning. The win ends the Baysox three game losing streak and breaks up New Britain's nine game winning streak. The teams combined for 25 hits, including five homeruns and five doubles.

Ryan Finan got the offense going in the top of the second with a two-run homer to right, but the lead was short-lived. Baysox starter Jason Berken ran into trouble in the bottom of the inning.

Berken gave up a single to Erik Lis to lead off the inning before giving up an RBI double to left by David Winfree. Winfree scored on a Trevor Plouffe single to right and Jeff Christy drew a walk with two outs in the inning. Steve Tolleson doubled to right, scoring both Plouffe and Christy, before Berken struck out Matt Moses to end the inning with the Rock Cats leading 4-2.

After a pair of one-out singles by Mike Rodriguez and Carlos Rojas in the top of the third, Lou Montanez put the Baysox back in front with a three-run blast to left. Jeff Nettles made it back-to-back homeruns when he homered to center. Carlos Rojas and Mike Pierce each hit sacrifice flies to give the Baysox an additional run in the fourth and fifth innings. The Baysox led 8-4 when Jason Berken ran into trouble again in the bottom of the sixth.

Erik Lis led off the inning with a double to right and went to third on a David Winfree single. Lis scored on a sacrifice fly by Felix Molina. Trevor Plouffe singled to left and Jeff Christy hit a two-out infield single to short, loading the bases for Steve Tolleson. Berken got Tolleson to ground out to short to end the inning.

Ryan Keefer came out to pitch for the Baysox in the seventh inning and allowed solo homeruns to Matt Moses and Erik Lis. The homeruns cut the Baysox lead down to 8-7. Julio Manon came out in the eighth inning, looking for a two-inning save. He retired the first three batters he faced, the last two on strikeouts looking.

The Baysox added an insurance run in the ninth when Kennard Jones hit a single to drive in Jeff Nettles. Manon came back out in the bottom of the ninth and retired the Rock Cats in order again, recording two more strikeouts.

Jason Berken earned the win, improving to 3-2, after allowing five runs in 6.0 innings pitched. Ryan Keefer earned a hold, allowing two runs in 1.0 innings pitched, and Julio Manon recorded his tenth save, pitching two scoreless innings while striking out four. With the win the Baysox improve to 18-16.

The Baysox will continue their road trip when they open a three game series at Portland on Friday at 6:00 p.m. The team will return home Tuesday, May 11 for a seven game homestand.
