New Britain Rock Cats News Release

Despite two late-inning homeruns, the Rock Cats' 9-game winning streak came to an end today when visiting Bowie thwarted their comeback attempt and prevailed, 9-7, in front of 6,186 at New Britain Stadium. The 10:35 AM contest attracted the Rock Cats' fourth sellout crowd of the young season.

Bowie got on the board first when, after a 1-out walk to Nolan Reimold, the Baysox' Ryan Finan sent the first pitch he saw from New Britain starter Jay Rainville over the right-field fence to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. The margin didn't last long as the Rock Cats scored 4 times on as many hits in the bottom of the frame to take a 4-2 advantage. Steve Tolleson's opposite-field double was the inning's key blow, plating New Britain's go-ahead runs.

Bowie responded immediately with 4 runs of their own, when Lou Montanez and Jeff Nettles stroked back-to-back homeruns off Rainville (2-4) as part of a 5-hit uprising in the 3rd. The Baysox, who collected 14 total hits on the day, proceeded to score single runs in both the 4th and 5th innings to assume an 8-4 lead.

New Britain, hoping to set a franchise record with its 10th consecutive win and third straight series sweep, began to stir in the 6th when Trevor Plouffe plated Erik Lis to cut the deficit to 8-5. Lis and David Winfree each had 3 hits for the Rock Cats on the day.

In the 7th, Bowie replaced starter and eventual winner Jason Berken (3-2) with reliever Ryan Keefer. New Britain's Matt Moses and Lis greeted the right-hander with booming HRs over the RF wall, making it a 1-run game.

The Baysox closed out the scoring in the 9th when they scored 1 run on 2 hits off New Britain's Kyle Aselton. Bowie's bullpen ace, Julio Manon, pitched two scoreless innings to pick up his 10th Save of 2008. Kennard Jones collected 3 hits for Bowie while Montanez picked up 2 hits and 3 RBI.
