Tolleson, Rock Cats Pounce On Baysox 'Pen in Extras

(New Britain, CT) - The Baysox had a lead heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, but the bullpen couldn't slam the door and the Rock Cats went on to win 7-6 in 10 innings. With the loss, the Baysox have now lost three in a row and trail the Harrisburg Senators by 3.5 games in the Southern Division.

Freddie Bynum led off the game with a homerun to centerfield, but was then removed from the game. Carlos Rojas came out to play shortstop in the bottom of the first. New Britain scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first when Brock Peterson doubled to center, scoring Luke Hughes and Dustin Martin.

It was a rough game for Eastern League Player of the Month Luke Hughes. Hughes crashed into the wall in center field to rob Lou Montanez of a hit in the first inning and fouled a ball off his foot in the third inning. Hughes was replaced by Steve Tolleson in the top of the fourth inning.

The Baysox scored a run in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game, 2-2. Ryan Finan singled to left and scored on a Brian Peterson double to right. The Baysox would go on to add three more runs in the top of the fifth.

Carlos Rojas led off the fifth inning with a double to center field. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Mike Rodriguez and scored on Lou Montanez single to center. Montanez went to third on a two out single by Nolan Reimold and both runners would score on a Ryan Finan double to center. Heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Baysox led 5-2.

The Rock Cats answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Brock Peterson singled to left to lead off the inning. Erik Lis doubled to right, moving Peterson to third. Trevor Plouffe grounded out to short to score Peterson and Felix Molina singled to right to drive in Lis.

Nolan Reimold drove in Lou Montanez with a double to left in the top of the seventh to give the Baysox an insurance run. The Rock Cats came right back with a run in the bottom of the inning when Toby Gardenhire drove in Erik Lis with an RBI single to cut the lead to 6-5. New Britain tied the game in the bottom of the eighth on a solo homerun by Steve Tolleson.

Mike Rodriguez and Lou Montanez singled to lead off the top of the ninth inning, but Jeff Nettles grounded into a double play and Nolan Reimold flew out to end the inning. The Baysox were retired in order in the top of the tenth inning.

Steve Tolleson singled to left to lead off the bottom of the tenth and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dustin Martin. Tolleson stole third base and scored the winning run on a single by Brock Peterson.

Baysox starter David Hernandez allowed four runs in 5.0 innings on eight hits and three walks while striking out six. Felix Romero allowed two runs on five hits in 2.0 innings. Rommie Lewis pitched 1.2 scoreless innings but Gerrardo Casadiego allowed a run 0.2 innings to earn the loss.

The Baysox and the Rock Cats combined for 28 hits in the game. Lou Montanez had three hits and two runs scored for the Baysox, while Brock Peterson went 4-for-6 with a run and an RBI and Erik Lis went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

The Baysox and the Rock Cats will complete the four game series Thursday at 10:35 a.m. RHP Jason Berken (2-2, 2.48 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Baysox, he will go up against RHP Jay Rainville (2-3, 9.00 ERA).
