Early Start Lifts Trenton To 7-2 Win Over Erie

(Erie, PA)- LF Edwar Gonzalez and 3B Carlos Mendoza each had 3 RBI to lead Trenton to a 7-2 win over Erie on Thursday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park in Erie, PA. Trenton swept the four-game series and has now won seven games in a row.

Trenton (23-12) jumped on the board with four runs in the top of the 1st inning. 2B Kevin Russo led off with a single against Erie starting pitcher Josh Rainwater (2-2). DH Austin Jackson followed with a double to push Russo to third base. Russo would then score on a passed ball to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, the Thunder loaded the bases up on walks to CF Colin Curtis and RF Jose Tabata. With two outs, 3B Carlos Mendoza delivered a bases-clearing double to increase the lead to 4-0. On the afternoon, Trenton scored six of its seven runs with two outs in an inning.

The Thunder would make it 5-0 in the 2nd inning on an RBI single by LF Edwar Gonzalez. Gonzalez added a two-run single in the 4th inning to extend the lead to 7-1. Gonzalez, who had 3 RBI in the game, now has 8 RBI in 7 games for the Thunder. RHP Jason Jones (5-0) went 5 IP and gave up 5 H and 2 ER. He struck out 3 and walked 2. RHP Anthony Claggett relieved Jones and tossed three scoreless innings. RHP Josh Schmidt pitched a scoreless 9th inning. Rainwater only went 1 IP and gave up 3 H and 5 ER for Erie. He had to come out of the game in top of the 2nd inning due to injury.

Trenton will start the second leg of the road trip on Friday night against the Akron Aeros, the Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. Game time on Friday night is set for 7:05 p.m. This is the first match-up between the two teams since the Eastern League Championship Series last September. LHP Chase Wright (4-1, 2.95) will pitch for Trenton against Akron LHP Ryan Edell (1-2, 4.50).
