Altoona Curve News Release
AKRON, OH - The Altoona Curve came inches away of tying the final game of a four games series on Thursday afternoon at Canal Park. Instead pinch-runner James Boone was thrown out trying to score the game-tying run from second base on a single to right field by Anthony Webster in the top of the ninth inning. The Curve dropped the affair, 1-0, which sent Altoona to its fourth loss in five games.
The Curve (13-20) rallied in the ninth inning off one of the league's best closers, Randy Newsom, but a perfect throw from Akron right-fielder Ryan Goleski and a quick tag of catcher Armando Camacaro on Boone proved to be the difference for the Curve, who were held silent offensively for most of the afternoon, gathering only four total hits in the game.
Akron righty Frank Herrmann (4-2) blanked the Curve bats over seven innings, scattering just two hits. Akron's only run of the game came in the bottom of the second inning by away of a Camacaro RBI single to left field.
Overshadowed in late-inning excitement was the outstanding performance of Curve starter Jimmy Barthmaier, who in 4 2/3 innings allowed just one run on five hits, and struck out five batters.
Dave Davidson also pitched well for the Curve, as the southpaw did not allow a run in 2 1/3 innings.
The Curve will return to action Friday evening as they open a four-game set at the Reading Phillies at 7:05 p.m. Altoona will turn to lefty Kyle Bloom (0-2, 7.48) while former Curve right-hander Kip Bouknight (2-3, 4.64) toes the rubber for the R-Phils. Radio Coverage of Friday's game begins at 6:50 p.m. on flagship station WHPA-FM, 93.5 and the Curve Radio Network.
Altoona will return home to host the Akron Aeros May 13-15. Great seats for the homestand remain and can be obtained by calling 877-99-CURVE, online at AltoonaCurve.com or in person at the Blair County Ballpark box office.
