Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves could not complete a comeback on Wednesday night at People's Natural Gas Field as they dropped the series finale to the Altoona Curve 8-6.
Altoona once again struck for a big inning as they put up six on Erie starter Derek Hankins in the bottom of the third. Eric Wood and Adam Frazier each singled to start the inning. Edward Salcedo moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt. Josh Bell then walked, loading the bases for Jose Osuna. Osuna got the scoring started with a two-run single. Dan Gamache followed with an RBI single, scoring Bell for a 3-0 lead. Stetson Allie then belted a three-run home run to left, his second in the last three games, for a 6-0 lead.
Erie got on the board in the top of the fourth against Curve starter Chad Kuhl. Jeff McVaney singled with one out and moved into scoring position on a two-out error. Austin Green singled home McVaney making it a 6-1 game.
The SeaWolves chipped away once again in the fifth. With one out, Alberto Gonzalez singled and Wynton Bernard walked. Dominic Ficociello extended his hitting streak to six straight with a two-run double to the left field alley making it 6-3. McVaney then stepped in and sent a bouncer to third, a throwing error by Salcedo allowed Ficociello to score making it 6-4.
Erie closed the gap once again in the seventh against reliever John Kuchno. McVaney led off and reached on the fourth error of the game by the third baseman Salcedo. Jason Krizan singled to push McVaney into scoring position and he came home to score on a Green groundout making it 6-5.
Altoona went back ahead by three in the seventh. Frazier led off with a single and Salcedo connected on a two-run home run making it 8-5.
In the top of the eighth, Bernard belted a two-out, solo home run to left making it a two-run game at 8-6.
Hankins (4-7) had his two-game win streak snapped. He allowed eight runs on 10 hits with a pair of walks and a season-high nine strikeouts. It was Hankins highest strikeout total since he struck out a career-high 10 on May 21, 2005.
