Richmond Rallies past RubberDucks

Richmond's Myles Schroder and Jackson Williams delivered back-to-back, two-out RBI singles in the eighth inning to lift the Flying Squirrels to a 5-3 win and three-game series sweep over the Akron RubberDucks Wednesday afternoon at The Diamond.

Turning Point

After the RubberDucks (50-48) had rallied for three runs in the top of the eighth to tie the game, 3-3, The Flying Squirrels quickly answered with a rally of their own in the bottom of the eighth against Akron all-star reliever Josh Martin (6-1). Richmond's Ricky Oropesa drew a lead-off walk and was lifted for a pinch runner. After a sacrifice bunt by Austin Slater and a strikeout of Devin Harris, Schroder and Jackson lifted back-to-back, soft singles to center to drive in a run apiece for a 5-3 Squirrels lead.

Mound Presence

Mike Clevinger started for Akron and worked 5 2/3 innings scattering five hits and two runs. He fanned four batters, raising his season total to 97. Clevinger left in the sixth trailing 2-0. The Flying Squirrels (51-45) extended the lead to 3-0 in the seventh when Engel Beltre scored from second on a wild pickoff throw from right-hander Jacob Lee.

Duck Tales

Akron snapped a 20-inning scoreless drought in the eighth when hey scored three runs to tie it. Anthony Gallas belted a two-run homer to left off Richmond lefty Braulio Lara, and Bryson Myles drilled a pinch-hit RBI single off Tyler Mizenko. For Gallas, it was his third home run of the road trip and his team-high 12th of the year. Gallas also added a double in the 9th . Bradley Zimmer was the only other RubberDucks hitter with two hits. He was 2-3, with a pair of singles and was also hit twice by pitches.

Notes

The RubberDucks finished 3-4 on the road trip...Left-hander Kelvin Marte started and tossed six scoreless innings for Richmond...Mizenko (4-1) was charged with a blown save, but was also the winning pitcher, as he stayed on and worked a scoreless ninth after the Squirrels took the lead...The RubberDucks were swept by the Flying Squirrels in a three game series for the second time this month...Time of game: 3:03...Attendance: 7,952.

The RubberDucks will return home to Canal Park to begin a seven-game homestand, beginning Thursday at 7:05 p.m. against Altoona. RHP Charlie Brewer will start for Akron, while LHP Steven Brault is the expected starter for Altoona. The game will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1350 AM and at www.akronrubberducks.com. It will also be televised on the CBS Sports Network.
