Erie SeaWolves News Release
The Erie SeaWolves were swept in double-header action on Tuesday, as they could not protect a six run lead in the seventh inning of game two against the Altoona Curve.
After a quite first few innings, it was Altoona who scored in the third to take a 1-0 lead. Adam Frazier led the inning off with a single, and scored all the way from first on a pinch hit double by Edward Salcedo.
The 'Curve held onto the 1-0 lead until the sixth when Erie struck for two to take the lead. It was Miguel Gonzalez who gave Erie the lead when he blasted his second homer of the year over the left field wall that plated Wade Gaynor and put the 'Wolves on top.
After Altoona was held scoreless in the bottom half of the sixth, Erie responded with five in the seventh to extend the lead. Wynton Bernard led the inning off with a single and was moved over on a sacrifice bunt by Harold Castro. Dominic Ficociello then walked as Bernard stole third to give Erie men on the corners. Jason Krizan then drove home Wynton Bernard with a single while (Miguel) Gonzalez drove home both Ficociello and Krizan. The 'Wolves continued to pour it on as Alberto Gonzalez plated (Miguel) Gonzalez and Bernard singled home James Robbins.
The SeaWolves took a 7-1 lead into the seventh inning, where the wheels fell off as the bullpen could secure the six run lead.
Eric Wood and Adam Frazier both singled to start the inning, and then were driven in by a Salcedo triple. Josh Bell then singled home Salcedo and forced Erie to make a pitching change. It was Jose Osuna and Dan Gamache who greeted reliever Melvin Mercedes with back-to-back singles, which plated Bell. Stetson Allie then walked to load the bases and Jacob Stallings sent a sacrifice fly to center, which scored Osuna. With two outs and two men on, Andy Vasquez doubled passed an outstretched Bernard in left, which cleared the bases and completed the comeback for Altoona.
The 'Wolves dropped game two of twin bill, an 8-7 final.
Erie starter Warwick Saupold threw well in the spot start as he allowed only a run on three hits in five innings of work. It was Mercedes who took the loss on the mound for the 'Wolves as he allowed three runs on three hits in just a third of an inning in relief.
Note: The SeaWolves dropped game one of the doubleheader 18-7. They jumped ahead 1-0 on Curve starter Tyler Glasnow but Erie starter Austin Kubita gave up eight in less than three innings of work. Confesor Lara and Slade Smith also combined to allow 10 in the losing effort.
