SeaWolves claim first comeback win of season

The SeaWolves let an early lead slip away on Wednesday night, but managed a two-out ninth inning comeback to down the Binghamton Mets 5-4. The win for the ‘Wolves was their first comeback win when trailing after the sixth inning this season.

The SeaWolves jumped ahead on Binghamton starter Salvador Aguilar in the top of the first inning. Will Rhymes led off with a single to left and got to second on a wild pitch. Rhymes advanced to third on a groundout by Danny Worth and he scored on a double off the wall in right by Deik Scram, giving Erie a 1-0 lead.

The ‘Wolves added to the lead in the top of the second inning. On the first pitch of the inning, Dusty Ryan connected on a solo home run over the wall in left for a 2-0 Erie lead. The home run for Ryan was his third in the last four games. He leads the team with 11 long balls.

Binghamton got on the board in the bottom of the second. Ambiorix Concepcion reached on an error by Worth with one out and advanced to third on a seeing eye single to left by Salomon Manriquez. Concepcion scored on a sacrifice fly by Jonathon Malo, making it a 2-1 game in favor of the ‘Wolves. The run was unearned for Erie starter Josh Rainwater.

Erie scored for the third time in the top of the third inning. Worth led off with an opposite field double down the right field line and moved over to third on a ground ball by Scram Ryan Roberson singled to right, scoring Worth, giving the Howlers a 3-1 advantage.

The B-Mets again cut into the Erie lead in the bottom of the third. Emmanuel Garcia led off with a single and got to second on an error. Eric Reed then singled to put runners on the corners for Nick Evans. Evans singled home Garcia to make it a 3-2 game. Rainwater then induced a 6-4-3 double play and a pop-out to Roberson to end the inning with no further damange.

The B-Mets would take their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth on defensive miscues by the ‘Wolves. Jose Coronado and Garcia led off with back-to-back singles. Erie Reed flew out for the first out of the inning but Evans singled to load the bases. Mike Carp grounded to short and the ball went off the glove of Worth. The error allowed Coronado to score, tying the game at 3-3. Caleb Stewart followed with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Garcia, giving the Mets a 4-3 lead.

The score remained the same until the top of the ninth inning. Justin Justice led off with a walk. Ryan singled but on the play, the ball hit Justice for the first out of the inning. Ryan would be replaced at first by pinch runner Joe Tucker. After a Kirkland strikeout, Casper Wells singled up the middle to put the tying run at second and the go-ahead run at first. Rhmyes stepped in and fell behind in the count 0-2. He worked the count even and after fouling off three pitches, Rhymes roped a two-run triple down the right field line, giving the ‘Wolves a 5-4 lead. The triple for Rhymes was his fourth on the season and it gave the ‘Wolves their first lead since leading 3-2 in the fifth.

Leading by one in the bottom of the ninth, the ‘Wolves turned it over to closer Casey Fien. Fien retired the first two, Coronado and Garcia, both on strikeouts looking and induced a fly ball to center off the bat of Eric Reed to preserve the win. Fien picked up his fifth save of the season.

Brendan Wise (1-0) picked up the win tossing a scoreless eighth inning.

Rainwater took a no-decision for Erie going six innings, allowing four runs, two earned, on eight hits with no walks and a strikeout.
