Connecticut Defenders News Release
MANCHESTER, NH- Joey Martinez dazzled as the Defenders' offense pummeled in a 9-0 drumming of the last place New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
Joey Martinez and Scott Richmond came out of the gates strong for their respective clubs as they exchanged zeroes on the line score for the first four frames.
The Defs broke the silence in the fifth inning as Eddy Martinez-Esteve led off with single, Jake Wald reached on an error by the shortstop that brought Martinez-Esteve to the dish to make it 1-0 Connecticut. Kyle Haines then singled as Wald scored on a throwing error by Travis Snider in left and Antoan Richardson belted a single of his own to score Haines as the tally ran to 3-0.
Connecticut added another in the sixth on a solo bomb off the stick of Adam Witter. Witter's homer was his team-high ninth of the season.
The Defenders went big in the seventh inning as Dave Maroul started things off with a base knock. Haines doubled Maroul to the plate, and Antoan Richardson connected on a belt-high fastball that sailed over the right-center field fence for a two-run home run. Travis Ishikawa followed with a walk, Eliezer Alfonzo laced a two-bagger, and Ishikawa crossed home on a sacrifice fly by Witter to balloon the score to 8-0, Connecticut.
The Defs mercilessly tacked another run on in the eighth on an RBI single off the bat of Haines to score Maroul from second to push the advantage to 9-0.
Meanwhile, Martinez was filthy off the rubber. Joey chucked seven scoreless innings, scattered just two hits, walked one and fanned four. The Fisher Cats couldn't touch Martinez after the second inning as he sat down 16 consecutive batters before he was lifted for lefty Jason Waddell.
Waddell and Ronnie Ray locked things down in the final two innings as the Defenders won their most lop-sided shutout of the season, 9-0.
The Defs and Cats will play a rubber game on Thursday night at 7:05pm, as the AT&T Real Yellow Pages Pre-Game Show will begin at 6:50pm on the Defenders Radio Network or on ctdefenders.com.
