August 31, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Erie SeaWolves News Release
PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the week ending August 30th:
Erie SeaWolves first baseman Michael Bertram has been named the Eastern League Player of the Week for the week ending August 30th. The 6'2", 220 lb. slugger had an outstanding week for the SeaWolves, batting .346 (9-for-26) with two doubles, two triples, two home runs, 11 RBI, eight runs scored, three walks and a .808 slugging percentage over six games. Bertram, who is a native of Lexington, Kentucky, had at least one hit in each of the six games he played in last week and drove in at least one run in five of those games, including three games in which he drove in three runs. He led all Eastern League players in RBI last week and also tied for the league lead in runs scored and triples, ranked second in slugging percentage and tied for third in home runs. The 25-year old was promoted from Class-A Lakeland in late July and has been on a tear since joining the SeaWolves, hitting .304 (28-for-92) with six doubles, three triples, six home runs, 24 RBI and 16 runs scored in 24 games. Michael, who hit .281 with 19 doubles, 10 home runs and 47 RBI prior to his promotion from Lakeland, was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 39th round of the 2006 draft out of the University of Kentucky. 630
Madison Bumgarner, a left-handed starting pitcher for the Connecticut Defenders, is the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending August 30th. The 20-year old made one start for the Defenders last week and was 1-0 with two strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA in seven innings pitched. Bumgarner, who is a native of Hickory, North Carolina, made his only appearance of the week on Wednesday night at New Britain and pitched seven shutout innings in a 3-0 victory over the Rock Cats. He struck out two batters in the game while allowing just one walk and scattering four hits. With the win he improved his record to 9-1 on the season while lowering his ERA to 1.91 and his WHIP to 1.06, both of which would lead the league if he had pitched enough innings this season to qualify. The 6'4", 215 lb. southpaw has not allowed an earned run in six of his 18 appearances with the Defenders since being promoted from Class-A San Jose in early May, and he has allowed two earned runs or less in 15 of those 18 games. Madison, who won the Minor League Baseball Most Spectacular Pitcher Award last season after going 15-3 with a 1.46 ERA with Class-A Augusta, was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the first round of the 2007 draft as the 10th overall selection.
