Aerodynamics...

Too Little, Too Late...Akron starter Bobby Livingston gave up four runs in the first three innings and the Aeros offense was unable to recover yesterday afternoon, dropping a 5-3 final to Binghamton and missing out on a chance to celebrate a division title in front of the home faithful. The B-Mets picked up a pair of runs in the top of the first to open an early lead, and although Akron got a run back in the bottom of the inning solo home runs from Binghamton's Salvador Paniagua and Ike Davis staked the visitors to a 4-1 lead. Livingston did settle down and keep the Mets off the board for the next four innings, but all Akron could muster was an RBI double from C Armando Camacaro. Davis struck again with two down in the eighth on a broken-bat RBI single, and although the Aeros did get the potential tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth they couldn't rally.

Bottom Line...Even though Akron was unable to clinch the Southern Division title on its own yesterday, the Aeros still claimed the top spot when Reading dropped game one of its doubleheader with Bowie. As a result, Akron has secured first place in the division and home field advantage in the first round of the playoffs, with the Southern Division Championship Series slated to begin Wednesday, September 9th at Canal Park. Game two will be on Thursday the 10th (featuring fireworks after the game), and if necessary game five will be Sunday, September 13th. All games are scheduled to start at 7:05 p.m. This marks the third regular-season division title in the past five years for Akron, although it is the first crown since 2006.

Ghosts of Aeros Past...A former Aero was at the heart of Bowie's game one win over Reading last night which secured the division title for Akron, as Baysox 1B Eric Crozier accounted for all the scoring in the 1-0 triumph. Crozier, who was drafted by the Indians in 2000 and played for the Aeros in 2002 and 2003, belted an inside-the-park home run off Major League rehabber Brett Myers in the top of the second Saturday night before the game was suspended by rain. Relievers Pedro Beato and Luis Lebron then made the margin hold up once play resumed.

Fun with Rosters...Akron made a roster move today, as Livingston has gone back up to Class AAA Columbus, LHP Matt Meyer has been activated from the disabled list, and IF Kyle Haines has rejoined the club from Class A Kinston (although Haines is on the disabled list). Livingston's promotion means the Aeros will carry starting pitchers Josh Tomlin, Jeanmar Gomez, Eric Berger, Connor Graham, and Scott Barnes into the post-season.

Did You Know...Since we brought up Eric Crozier and his time with the Aeros in 2003, let's examine another former Aero from that squad. Corey Smith, the older brother of current Akron reliever Carlton Smith, is hitting .250 with 20 homers and 82 RBI as the starting first baseman for Northwest Arkansas in the Texas League. He is tied for fourth in the league in home runs.
