Mississippi Sea Wolves News Release
BATON ROUGE, La. â Sparked by a shorthanded tally, the Mississippi Sea Wolves rallied to score four straight goals and defeat the Baton Rouge Kingfish 5-4.
Mississippi veteran Cody Bowtell opened the score at 4:27. Bowtell took a centering feed from Travis Lisabeth and beat goaltender Paxton Schafer for his third goal of the campaign.
Baton Rouge took over later in the frame. Kingfish forward Sam Paquet handcuffed Sea Wolves goaltender Greg Gardner on a shot from the top of the right circle at 7:58, tying it 1-1. Then Bryan Richardson made it 2-1 for Baton Rouge, as he intercepted a clearing pass, skated in and beat Gardner with a shot over his left shoulder. Still in the first, the Kingfish capitalized on a power play. Wes Scanzano deposited his third of the campaign, making it 3-1 Baton Rouge after 20 minutes.
Mississippi bounced back on the penalty kill in the second as a pair of Sea Wolves veterans combined a terrific effort. Dave Paradise whipped a pass infront to a streaking Steffon Walby. The Sea Wolves captain re-directed the puck past Schafer, closing the score to 3-2, for Baton Rouge.
In the third period, the Sea Wolves Darryl Campbell tallied his first of the campaign at the 2:35 mark, beating Schafer's glove, tying the score 3-3. Then Walby went back to work again, leading a Mississippi attack. John Evangelista was knocked down infront, but from his knees he knifed in his first of the season, giving Mississippi a 4-3 lead.
Later in the third, the Sea Wolves clicked with the man advantage. Bowtell banged his second goal of the game, giving Mississippi a 5-3 cushion. Richardson would score his second of the game for Baton Rouge with 25 seconds remaining, but it wouldn't be enough.
Gardner improves his record to 4-2, by stopping 38 of 42 shots. Schafer suffered the loss, turning away 24 of 29. Schafer's record drops to 2-2.
Mississippi went 1 for 4 on the power play. While Baton Rouge converted on 2 of 5 power play opportunities.
