Generals defeat Reading 3-2

The Greensboro Generals (3-2-1) began the 2002-03 home campaign with a 3-2 victory over the Reading Royals. In front of 4,231 at the Greensboro Coliseum, the Generals managed two first period goals, and would not trail for the remainder of the game, marching onward over Reading, who fell to 3-5-0.

The Royals would score in the opening minute of the first period on a goal by Brian McCullough, with Greensboro answering on a power play goal by David Whitworth with 9:19 remaining in the first period. Whitworth scored his team leading fifth goal of the season, with assists credited to Chris Bell and Geno Parrish. Just 57 seconds later, the Generals would score their second goal of the game, and third goal of the season for Matt Turek, on assists from Mark Turner and Alex Andreyev.

The lone goal of the second period was scored by the Generals captain Jay Murphy, scoring his second goal of the young season. Pete Gardiner and Ole Kjenstad were responsible for the Generals assists. Reading would tack on a late score with 5:26 remaining by Dan Riva, however the Royals would not challenge for the equalizer. Generals goalie Dan Berthiaume stopped 32 of 34 shots to earn his third victory of the year.

Greensboro plays host to the Richmond Renegades on October 26th, with a 7:30 start at the Greensboro Coliseum.
