Sea Dogs to Host Father's Day 5K Road Race

Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs in conjunction with the Maine Medical Center Cancer Institute, Peak Performance and the Maine Track Club, will be hosting the first annual Father's Day 5k Road Race on Father's Day, Sunday, June 21st, 2009 at 9:15 AM. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Maine Coalition to Fight Prostate Cancer. There will also be a Kid's Run that is free of charge, starting at 8:30 AM.

Slugger and his Dad lead the way on the flat 5K course which begins in front of the Portland Expo building, travels down Congress Street, turning down Stevens Avenue, and making a right onto Brighton Avenue back down Deering Avenue into Fitzpatrick Stadium. The race culminates inside Hadlock Field in front of the third base dugout.

The top overall male and female finishers will receive a trophy, a pair of 2009 Season Tickets for the remainder of the 2009 Sea Dogs season, and throw out the ceremonial first-pitch prior to a future Sea Dogs game. The top three male and female finishers in each age group will also be presented with awards. All participants of the race will receive a complimentary ticket to attend a future Sea Dogs game.

The race is open to the public. Walkers and wheelchair racers are welcome as well. Registration is $18.00. The kid's race is free. If you would like to run in the Sea Dogs' Father's Day 5K Road Race you may register at Peak Performance on Marginal Way in Portland between 12:00 noon and 7:00 PM on Friday, June 19th or between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM on Saturday, June 20th. Additionally, runners may register the day of the race at Hadlock Field from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM. Runners who have already registered may also pick-up their packets at Peak Performance or Hadlock Field during the same hours as above. Making their debut at the Sea Dogs Father's Day 5k Road Race will be ChronoTrack D-Tag Disposable Chip Timing Systems.

Road Closures:

Park Avenue from Weymouth Street to Saint John Street will be closed to traffic from 8:50 AM to 9:15 AM.

The Portland Sea Dogs added the Father's Day 5k in 2009 after having a tremendous amount of success with a Mother's Day 5k Road Race for the last nine years. The Mother's Day 5K Road Race benefits Breast Cancer Research, the inaugural race in 2001 had 300 runners. Today the Sea Dogs Mother's Day 5K is the largest 5K and the second largest road race, behind the Beach to Beacon, in the State of Maine with more than 2,200 runners. More than 1,000 runners are expected for the inaugural Father's Day 5K Road Race.
