Gabbard Returns But \'Dogs Lose to Erie 5-1

(Portland, ME) - The Erie SeaWolves (37-28) scored five runs over two innings to beat the Portland Sea Dogs (32-33) 5-1 on a rainy Thursday night at Hadlock Field. Erie took the series from Portland, winning 2 of 3 and grabbed the season series by winning 4 of 6. The series finale was delayed 1 hour and 9 minutes at the start due to rain.

LHP Kason Gabbard (0-1) made his return to Portland, his first start with the Sea Dogs since June 20, 2006 when he fired 7 scoreless frames against Connecticut at Hadlock Field. Gabbard suffered the loss, working three innings, yielding two runs on three hits. The lefty issued four walks and fanned five. Erie scored both runs in the first inning on a bases-loaded walk by DH Ryan Strieby (0-for-1, RBI, 4 BB) and a run-scoring single by SS Cale Iorg (2-for-4, 2 RBI).

The SeaWolves scored three runs after two outs off RHP Blake Maxwell (3 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, BB) in the fifth inning. Strieby started the rally with a walk and advanced to third base on a single by C Alex Avila. Iorg reached on an RBI infield-hit to the shortstop and RF Deik Scram (1-for-3, 2 RBI) clocked a 2-run double to left-center field.

CF Josh Reddick (1-for-5, RBI) knocked in Portland's lone run in the fifth inning with an infield single. The run was set up on singles by LF Ryan Kalish (2-for-3, BB) and 2B Iggy Suarez (1-for-4).

RHP Pat Stanley (1-2) picked up his first win of the season for the SeaWolves. The righty notched a quality start, allowing one run on four hits over 6.1 IP. Stanley issued only two walks and recorded three strikeouts. RHP Zach Simons (1.2 IP) and RHP Brett Jansen (IP) closed out the win with 3 innings of scoreless relief for Erie.

LHP Dustin Richardson walked three in the seventh inning but fanned two to record a scoreless outing. RHP T.J. Large retired all six batters faced to lower his ERA to 0.83.

Portland opens up a 3-game series over the weekend against the Southern Division leading Akron Aeros (Indians affiliate) beginning at 7:00 PM from Hadlock Field. RHP Junichi Tazawa (7-4, 3.14) faces off against RHP Hector Rondon (6-4, 3.07). Notes...Gabbard threw 86 pitches - 47 strikeouts and made his first appearance since working one inning for Triple-A Oklahoma City on April 21...Richardson now ranks second on the team with 55 strikeouts...Erie scored 11 of 16 runs in the series with two outs...Reddick hit safely in all three games of the series.
