Binghamton Squanders Three-Run Lead in Ninth, Swept by Senators

The B-Mets took a three-run lead into the ninth, but a Ruben Tejada error was an omen of things to come as Harrisburg rallied to within a run before Edgardo Baez smashed a walk-off home run to left-center field off Jim Ed Warden to complete the 11-9 come-from-behind win at Metro Bank Park Thursday night.

Binghamton (26-39) plated six runs in the first two innings off Harrisburg starter Cory VanAllen, who last just two frames. Five of the six runs scored with two outs and the run-scoring ended in the second on Nick Evans' third home run of the season, a two-run shot to right to put the B-Mets in front 6-0.

Harrisburg (25-38) had an answer, however, in the fourth inning as five straight reached against starter Mike Antonini, including a three-run homer from Luke Montz, which cut the lead in half. Two more runs scored in the frame on a sacrifice bunt from reliever Matt Avery and an RBI single from Leonard Davis to cut the margin to 6-5.

The Senators tied the game in the fifth on a Bill Rhinehart bases-loaded single with no out. Reliever Stephen Clyne buckled down after giving up the hit and stranded the bases full without further damage, leaving the game tied at six.

The B-Mets took the lead in the sixth with two runs off reliever Andrew Kown. First, Josh Thole doubled to left-center to score Jose Coronado from first, who had walked to open the inning. Then after Evans walked, Josh Petersen singled on the infield to score Thole from third providing Binghamton an 8-6 cushion.

Binghamton added another run in the seventh to lead by three, which they carried into the ninth. Run-scoring singles from Marvin Lowrance and Michael Daniel got the Senators within a run against Warden in the ninth. With runners at the corners and two out, Edgardo Baez throttled a 1-0 pitch out of the yard to seal the win and the three-game sweep for Harrisburg.

With the seven-game roadtrip in their past, the B-Mets return home for seven straight, beginning with four games in three days against Trenton. In the first game of the Subway Series North, LHP Eric Niesen (0-1, 9.00) will get the call for Binghamton. The Thunder will counter with RHP Josh Schmidt (4-1, 1.36) The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 with the radio broadcast beginning at 6:50 with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
