CURVE, Pa. - A leadoff home run by Jeremy Hazelbaker to start the game set the tone for the Portland Sea Dogs as they took game one from the Curve, 7-2, on Friday night at Blair County Ballpark. Sea Dogs pitching permitted nine Curve hits but only two Curve runs.

Starter Jared Hughes (3-3), who had gone 3-1 in the month of May, permitted the leadoff homer to Hazelbaker to make it, 1-0, Portland after one batter. Hazelbaker would burn Hughes and the Curve again in the second as he doubled in a pair with one down to place Portland in front, 3-0.

Altoona countered with its only run off starter Jeremy Kehrt (1-0) in the third when Brock Holt singled sharply down the first base line with two away. First baseman Jorge Padron dove and stopped the ball and flipped it to Kehrt covering but Kehrt dropped the ball and kicked it away. An error was charged to Kehrt and Jose Hernandez scored from third on the play to pull Altoona within two.

It would be the last run the Curve would score until they got a two-out RBI single from Tony Sanchez in the eighth off reliever Eammon Portice.

In between the third and the eighth, Portland scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth frames off Curve pitching to open up a lead on Friday night. Hughes departed after four innings and allowed four runs on eight hits while striking out five. Tim Alderson and Bryan Morris each pitched in relief for the Curve with Alderson allowing a pair of runs over 1.2 innings and Morris a run over 3.1.

Shortstop Jordy Mercer finished the game 1-for-3 with a double to run his hitting streak to nine games in the loss. Holt and Matt Curry both had multi hit games for the Curve as well.

The Sea Dogs registered a total of 18 hits off of Altoona Curve pitching on Friday night, which is a new season-high in hits allowed for Altoona.
