Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ) - The Trenton Thunder (33-21) used a season-high 17 hits to win a wild ball game against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (35-19) 7-6 in front of 6,406 fans on Friday night at Waterfront Park. Cody Johnson, Corban Joseph and Ray Kruml each had three hits, and DeAngelo Mack drove in his first two runs at Double-A to lead the Thunder past the first place Fisher Cats. With the victory in game one of the three-game set, Trenton avoids losing back-to-back games for the first time since late April.
The Fisher Cats, the Eastern League's second-highest run scoring team, jumped ahead to a 5-0 lead through their first three plate appearances, but the Thunder would answer back in the bottom of the third. Cody Johnson, Jose Pirela and DeAngelo Mack each rapped RBI-singles to cut New Hampshire's lead to 5-3.
With Thunder starting pitcher and reigning Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Shaeffer Hall settling down, Trenton would score once in the fifth and sixth innings to tie the score at 5-5. Jose Gil smacked an RBI-double, and Mack added his second RBI of the night with a sacrifice fly to left field.
After the Fisher Cats scored a run on a wild pitch to take a 6-5 lead in the top of the seventh, the Thunder would grab their first lead of the game in the bottom half of the inning. Ray Kruml would single to shallow left-centerfield to tie the score, and Corban Joseph doubled to left field on a misplayed fly ball by Darin Mastroianni to give Trenton their first lead at 7-6.
That first and only Trenton lead would hold steady as Tim Norton nabbed his fifth save of the season, shutting down the Fisher Cats in the ninth to win the game for Shaeffer Hall.
In game two of the three-game series on Saturday night, the Thunder will send RHP Dellin Betances (3-1, 1.82) to the mound at Waterfront Park to deliver the first pitch at 7:05 PM. The Fisher Cats will counter with RHP Rey Gonzalez (6-1, 2.42). Tune-in to the game on 91.3 WTSR-FM and on trentonthunder.com. The SBLI Pre-Game Show with Jay Burnham and Hank Fuerst begins at 6:45 PM.
It's going to be a jam-packed Saturday night at Waterfront Park. From 2:00 PM until game time, fans cans participate in the first Community Blood Council of New Jersey blood drive at the ballpark. Postgame, fans will be treated to a performance by the Trenton Thunder Dance Team, as well as Fireworks presented by RE/MAX of New Jersey.
