
Sea Dogs Roster Bolstered With Additions Of Lavarnway, Maxwell, & Padron

Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs will resume play tonight after the Eastern League All-Star break with a new look team. The Boston Red Sox have announced several roster moves affecting the Double-A Portland roster. Joining the Sea Dogs from Single-A Salem are catcher Ryan Lavarnway and outfielder/ first baseman Jorge Padron. Right-handed pitcher Blake Maxwell will join the Sea Dogs from Triple-A Pawtucket. Additionally, Manny Delcarmen and Jeremy Hermida will begin major league rehab assignments for the Sea Dogs.
To make room on the roster, Sea Dogs' reliever Santo Luis was promoted to Triple-A Pawtucket and infielder Luis Segovia was transferred to Single-A Salem. Additionally, catcher Josue Peley was placed on the temporary inactive list. Major League rehab assignments do not count towards the 24-man roster limit.
The 22 year-old Lavarnway hit .289 (88-304) in 82 games for the Salem Red Sox this season and was selected to the 2010 Carolina League All-Star team. He is tied with Anthony Rizzo for the most home runs (14) in the Red Sox farm system this season and leads the organization with 63 RBI. Lavarnway was named the Carolina League Player of the Week (April 12-18) batting .462 (18-for-39), with 13 runs, five doubles, three home runs, and 15 RBI. Last season he led Red Sox farmhands with 21 home runs and a .540 slugging percentage at Single-A Greenville. The Woodland Hills, California native was drafted by the Red Sox in the sixth round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft
Padron, 23, hit .280 with one home run and 17 RBI in 30 games with the Salem Red Sox. A native of Pinar del Rio, Cuba, Padron was signed as an International Free Agent by Boston on March 30, 2010. Padron joined Salem on June 7th after spending time in extended spring training.
Maxwell has appeared in three games for the Pawsox this season, tossing 7.0 innings, allowing five runs and striking out three. Prior to joining the Pawsox, Maxwell was 4-1 with a 2.66 ERA in 24 appearances out of the bullpen for the Salem Red Sox. The 25 year-old spent the 2009 season in Portland. Last year with the Sea Dogs Maxwell went 7-8 with a 5.32 ERA in 31 appearances (18 starts). He was drafted by the Red Sox in the 40th round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft. Maxwell was named the Sea Dogs' 2009 Citizen of the Year by the fans.
Manny Delcarmen has been sidelined since July 1st with a right forearm strain. Delcarmen, 28, has gone 2-2 with a 4.59 ERA (17 ER/33.1 IP) in 33 relief appearances with the Red Sox this season. He's held opponents to a .220 average (27-for-123) while recording 23 strikeouts and 20 walks. Delcarmen appeared in 31 games for the Sea Dogs in 2005 posting a 4-4 record with three saves and a 3.23 ERA. The Boston, Massachusetts native was selected in the second round of the 2000 First-Year Player Draft.
Hermida, 26, has hit .217 (30-for-138) with five home runs and 27 RBI in 45 games for the Red Sox this season. He has made 37 starts, including 36 in left field and one in right field. He has been out since June 10th.
Luis, who was acquired by the Red Sox in April when he was claimed off waivers from the Chicago White Sox, was 5-1 for the Sea Dogs with a 2.72 ERA, while striking out 45 batters in 46.1 innings. The 26-year old reliever was amongst the team leaders in wins (T-1st, 5), ERA (1st, 2.72), AVG (1st, .221), and WHIP (T-3rd, 1.29). Luis' 45 strikeouts also ranked third out of the bullpen.
Segovia returns to Salem after appearing in five games with Portland hitting .250 (4-for-16) with a RBI.
The Sea Dogs return to Hadlock Field for a brief four game series with the Harrisburg Senators (Nationals) July 22nd through July 25th.
