New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release

(Manchester, NH)---Eric Thames powered the offense with four hits, while Danny Farquhar came in to throw 2.2 innings of scoreless relief in a 5-1 Fisher Cats loss to the Binghamton Mets before 5,969 Thursday night at Merchantsauto.com Stadium.

Binghamton (49-43) broke the scoreless tie in the top of the sixth. Michael Fisher got things started with a single to left. The leadoff hitter then moved from first to third on a base hit by Sean Ratliff (3-for-5) with one out, and was plated one batter later when Marshall Hubbard laced a ground ball up the middle. Hubbard's smash was cut off by shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria, who stepped on second to record the force out, but was unable to turn the double play, making 1-0.

The Mets added four runs in the seventh inning to take a 5-0 advantage. The No. 9 batter Brahiam Maldonado did most of the damage with a three-run home run onto the top of the Samuel Adams Bar and Grill, scoring Raul Reyes, who reached on a single, and Jose Coronado, who reached on a walk. Fisher also came around to score in the inning after reaching on a single, stealing second, taking third on a passed ball and touching home off on a Ratliff double.

New Hampshire (55-37) got to starter, and eventual winner, Mike Antonini (6-7, 3.70) for an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh to narrow the gap to 5-1. Shawn Bowman was the beneficiary of some miscommunication in the outfield that turned into a two-base error. Bowman then moved over to third on a single by Thames, and scored on a wild pitch.

Antonini worked 6.2 innings, giving up the one unearned run on six hits, while striking out four and walking one.

The Fisher Cats had their opportunities early, but couldn't cross the plate. In each of the first three innings, the leadoff batter reached via a single. Darin Mastroianni got the first hit for New Hampshire in the bottom of the first, but was stranded after three consecutive line outs. Thames ripped a base knock to left-center in the bottom of the second, but was erased after a stolen base attempt. Finally, Jonathan Diaz (1 for 3) singled to leadoff the bottom of the third, and got as far as third base with one out, but once again, the frame ended in a scoreless tie after a line out and ground out.

Base running blunders cost the Fisher Cats from taking a lead in the home-half of the fourth. Thames produced a one-out double, but was thrown out at third trying to steal. Adam Loewen (1 for 4) followed with a single, but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double.

Fisher Cats starter Rey Gonzalez did his best to limit the Binghamton attack early. The Mets first player to reach second base came in the top of the fourth when Raul Reyes led off the inning with a single to center, and moved over on a fielder's choice. To that point, Binghamton had only recorded two singles, and left both men at first base.

Gonzalez (1-1, 5.40) ended the night after 6.1 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits, while striking out two and walking one.

The Fisher Cats continue their series against the Mets on Friday with the second of four games. Newly acquired lefty Jo-Jo Reyes, who came from the Atlanta Braves organization in part of the Alex Gonzalez deal, takes to the mound for New Hampshire. He will take on southpaw Robert Carson, who will also be making his Eastern League debut. Fisher Cats Pre Game begins at 6:45 p.m. on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Bob Lipman.

It is Ed Randall's Bat for the Cure night at the ballpark Friday. To get tickets, and help strike out prostate cancer, visit www.nhfishercats.com or call (603) 641-2005.
