
Sea Dogs Receive Kalish from Single-A Salem

Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs have received outfielder Ryan Kalish from Single-A Salem. Sea Dogs' outfielder Matt Sheely was transferred to Single-A Salem. The Sea Dogs also received left-handed pitcher Kyle Fernandes from Single-A Salem and Sea Dogs' right-handed pitcher Ryne Lawson was transferred to Single-A Lowell. Additionally, the Sea Dogs placed right-handed pitcher Adam Mills on the disabled list, retroactive to May 13th. The Sea Dogs' received right-handed pitcher Blake Maxwell from Single-A Lowell. Maxwell will start for the Sea Dogs against the New Britain Rock Cats in New Britain, Connecticut following the completion of Thursday's suspended game. Chad Rhoades will start the suspended game for the Sea Dogs at 4:35 PM on Friday.
The 21 year-old Kalish is rated by Baseball America as the 13th ranked prospect in the Red Sox organization in 2009. Kalish has appeared in 32 games for the Salem Red Sox this season hitting .304 (35-for-115) with five home runs and 21 RBI. His .434 on base percentage ranks fourth in the Carolina League. Kalish is 8-for-11 in stolen base attempts this season and was named the Red Sox Minor League Base Stealer of the Month for April. Kalish spent most of the 2008 season with Single-A Greenville before a call-up in August to Single-A Lancaster. Kalish hit a combined .266 between the two stops with five home runs and 46 RBI. The Shrewsbury, New Jersey resident was selected by the Red Sox in the ninth round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft.
Sheely appeared in 14 games for the Salem Red Sox this season hitting .310 with six RBI before joining the Sea Dogs on May 1st. Sheely appeared in nine games for Portland hitting .333 (6-for-18) with two RBI. The 22 year-old Sheely spent the 2008 season with Single-A Lancaster where he hit .218 with 12 RBI in 65 games. He was selected by the Red Sox in 48th round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft.
Westport, Massachusetts native Kyle Fernandes will be making his third appearance with Portland in as many years. Fernandes has appeared in ten games for the Salem Red Sox this season posting a 1-0 record with one save and a 2.66 ERA. In 2008, Fernandes set career-highs with 81 strikeouts and two saves in 34 appearances between Double-A Portland, Single-A Lancaster, and Single-A Greenville. The 23 year-old was drafted by the Red Sox in the 12th round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft.
The 23 year-old Lawson made two starts for the Sea Dogs this season posting a 0-1 record with a 4.70 ERA. In 2008, his first full professional season, Lawson combined to record a 5-4 record with four saves and a 3.59 ER ERA in 36 appearances (11 starts) between Single-A Greenville and Double-A Portland. The Stevenson, Alabama resident was selected by the Red Sox in 30th round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft.
Maxwell has appeared in seven games (four starts) for the Sea Dogs this season posting a 0-2 record with a 8.71 ERA. Maxwell, 24 years-old, was selected by the Red Sox in the 40th round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft. This is his first season at the Double-A level. In 2008 with Single-A Lancaster, Maxwell posted 5-9 record with one save and a 3.32 ERA.
The 24 year-old Mills has made six starts for the Sea Dogs in 2009 posting a 1-1 record with a 9.00 ERA. Mills finished tied for third among Red Sox minor leaguers in innings pitched and tied for fifth in games started in 2008. Mills was selected by the Red Sox in the eighth round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft.
The Portland Sea Dogs return to Hadlock Field on Tuesday, May 19th for a seven game homestand against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats and Connecticut Defenders.
