Erie SeaWolves News Release

The SeaWolves opened up Friday night's doubleheader with a bang as they cruised to a 12-5 win over the Bowie Baysox at Prince George's Stadium.

Bowie would take an early lead against Erie starter Jonah Nickerson in the bottom of the first inning. Melvin Dorta doubled with one out and scored on a Brandon Snyder single up the middle for a 1-0 lead. Snyder would later score on a two-out single by Miguel Abreau for a 2-0 lead.

Erie struck back in the top of the third against Bowie starter John Mariotti. Santo De Leon and Joe Tucker each singled to start the inning. Scott Sizemore singled home De Leon, cutting Bowie's lead down to a run at 2-1. With runners on the corners, Sizemore stole second, giving Erie two in scoring position. A wild pitch brought home Tucker, tying the game at 2-2.

In the top of the fifth, the ‘Wolves offense would explode. Tucker led off and was hit by a pitch and Sizemore walked to put two on base for Max Leon. Leon laid down a sacrifice bunt, moving the runners into scoring position. With the infield in, Brennan Boesh sent a ground ball to second and on an errant throw to the plate, Tucker scored to give Erie a 3-2 lead. Ryan Strieby was then hit by a pitch to load the bases for Alex Avila. Avila came through in a big way as he connected on a grand slam over the wall in right for a 7-2 ‘Wolves lead. The grand slam was the second of the season for Erie. With two outs in the inning, Cale Iorg homered to straight away center, his third, for an 8-2 Erie lead.

Bowie responded in the bottom of the fifth. Guillermo Rodriguez led off and homered to left to make it 8-3. Dave Krynzel doubled and with one out, Snyder homered, his fifth, cutting the Erie lead down to three runs at 8-5.

In the top of the sixth, Erie would not let up. Sizemore stepped in with the bases empty and one out and hit his sixth home run of the season for a 9-5 lead. Leon followed with a single putting a man on for Boesch. Boesch slammed a two-run home run to right, his fifth, for an 11-5 lead.

The ‘Wolves would add one more in the top of the seventh when Tucker singled home Andy Dirks for the 12-5 lead.

Nickerson (2-2) won his second straight decision going five innings, allowing five runs on eight hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The SeaWolves fell in the second game on Friday night's doubleheader on a walk-off, two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh as the clubs split the double dip.

The SeaWolves got on the board first in the top of the first inning against spot starter Ryan Keefer. With two outs, Brennan Boesch crushed his sixth home run of the season over the wall in right for a 1-0 Erie lead.

In the bottom of the first against Erie starter Ramon Garcia, Dave Krynzel led off with a double. A single by Jonathan Tucker put runners on first and third for Brandon Snyder. Snyder singled home Krynzel, tying the game at 1-1.

In the top of the second, the ‘Wolves would regain the lead. Cale Iorg led off and doubled to the wall in left. With one out, Iorg came home on a hit and run executed to perfection as Shawn Roof poked a single through the right side, giving Erie the 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Baysox would take the lead. Miguel Abreau was hit by a pitch to start the inning and was forced to leave the game. Pinch runner Melvin Dorta would come in to replace Abreau. Adam Donachie singled to put runners on first and second. Joe Nowicki laid down a bunt to move the runners over, Garcia fielded and overthrew to third and the ball went into left field, allowing Bowie to plate two, for a 3-2 lead.

The ‘Wolves would regain the lead in the top of the seven with two outs against Bowie closer Wilfredo Perez. Scott Sizemore walked with two outs and Max Leon stepped to the plate. Perez, who had yet to yield a run this season, served up a two out, two run home run to Leon on a 3-2 pitch, giving Erie a 4-3 lead.

The lead, however, would be short lived. In the bottom of the seventh, Dorta led off against Erie closer Brett Jensen and singled to right. With one out, Nowicki connected on a game-winning, two-run home run over the wall in right, giving Bowie a 5-4 win. Jensen, who had been perfect in save opportunities, dropped to 1-2 on the season.
