Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
Josh Thole stayed hot at NYSEG Stadium smacking two doubles but the Trenton Thunder snuck away with the 4-2 win in the second game of the five game series. Thole had reached base in eight straight plate appearances entering the eighth inning, but struck out looking against Kevin Whelan, who saved the game for Trenton.
Binghamton jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the first. Jose Coronado reached on an error by shortstop Eduardo Nunez in his first plate appearance for the B-Mets this season after returning from Buffalo. Thole then hit a double, his sixth straight hit including his five-hit performance last night, and Lucas Duda followed with a two-run single.
Zach McAllister settled in nicely after the first inning and silenced the Binghamton (15-18) bats, not allowing a run for the next six innings. Kevin Whelan then came and recorded the two inning save for Trenton (16-16), striking out three.
Jose Sanchez was cruising until the sixth inning where he ran into trouble, giving up three runs. Colin Curtis had an RBI double and Jorge Vazquez added an RBI single and later scored on a balk by Sanchez. Julio De La Cruz came on to record the last out of the inning via strikeout to keep the score 3-2. Sanchez, who only allowed two hits through the first five innings, gave up four in the sixth to go along with two balks. He balked just once in his first seven seasons in a Mets' farm uniform.
Kevin Smith added an insurance run for the Thunder on a lead off home run in the ninth to make the score 4-2. It was his first round tripper of the season.
Binghamton takes on Trenton in a double-header tomorrow. RHP Ryan Coultas (2-1, 2.67) will get the call for the B-Mets in game one against RHP Ivan Nova (2-2, 4.13) and RHP Tobi Stoner (1-0, 0.00) will take the mound for Binghamton in game two facing LHP Wilkins Arias (0-1, 2.95) of Trenton. The first pitch of game one is slated for 5:05 and the radio broadcast on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 4:50 with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show.
