Sea Dogs hold on to beat Defenders, 3-2

(Portland, ME) - The Sea Dogs scored two runs in the seventh inning to beat the Connecticut Defenders, 3-2 on Tuesday night at Hadlock Field. Portland clinches the series win over the Defenders and improves their homestand to 3-2.

Mark Wagner led the Sea Dogs 5-hit offense, going 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a run-scoring double. Wagner gave Portland a 1-0 lead in the second inning with a solo blast down the left field line, which struck the foul pole. The Portland catcher tied the game in the seventh inning on a Maine Monster double, scoring Aaron Bates.

Kyle Jackson (1-0) worked three innings in relief of Matt Goodson to pick up the win. Jackson allowed the go-ahead run in the sixth inning on Adam Witter's sacrifice fly.

Hunter Jones closed out the game with two scoreless innings to earn his second save of the year. The biggest play of the game happened in the eighth inning when Connecticut had runners at first and second with nobody out. Jones picked off Antoan Richardson, who was attempting to steal third base.

Garrett Broshuis (1-1) took the loss for Connecticut, allowing three runs in 6 and 1/3 innings.

Goodson made his first start since last July and worked four strong innings for the 'Dogs. The righty yielded three hits, one run and fanned seven.

Jay Johnson had the game-winning RBI, snapping a 2-2 tie in the seventh inning with a sacrifice fly off Ryan Sadowski.

Notes...Portland has their first 3-game winning streak of the season...Aaron Bates improved his hitting streak to five straight games.
