Defenders fall 3-2

April 15, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release

Portland, ME- One-run games have been the bane of the Defenders' existence, namely against the pesky Portland Sea Dogs who topped Connecticut, 3-2 on Tuesday night.

Just like Monday, the Sea Dogs cracked the scoreboard first as Mark Wagner led off the second with a solo home run to sway the lead to the home team, 1-0.

A scoreless third filtered into the top of the fourth where the Defenders would get even on an Adam Witter RBI single to bring home Travis Ishikawa who started the inning off with a double.

Connecticut would grasp their first lead of the series in the sixth as Witter would drive in his second run of the ballgame by way of the sacrifice fly to plate the speedy Ben Copeland. After five and half, the Defenders led 2-1.

The Sea Dogs would strike back for two in the seventh on leadoff back-to-back doubles and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jay Johnson to score Wagner from third to take a 3-2 advantage Portland would never relinquish.

The Defenders would put a scare into the Sea Dogs in the eighth as they loaded the bags, but all men would be left stranded as the Portland bullpen saved face and held on to the thin lead.

Connecticut ensured a losing road trip with the loss Tuesday night but look to avoid a sweep Wednesday as they face Portland for the final time until the third week of June. The AT&T Real Yellow Pages Pre-game show will begin at 5:45pm before the 6:00pm first pitch. All the action can be heard locally on the Defenders' flagship station WICH 1310 AM or worldwide at ctdefenders.com.

The Defenders will return home Thursday, April 17 at 6:35pm to take on the Reading Phillies. Tickets are still available for the contest by calling the box office at (860)887-7962.
