NEWS AND NOTES

WE CELEBRATE TONIGHT:Lewiston, Maine native Rene Rancourt will perform all four verses of the Star-Spangled Banner, as the Sea Dogs close out their 7-game homestand on Friday night against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Blue Jays affiliate)...Portland will celebrate Independence Day with a Post-Game Fireworks Show...Last night's 16-inning game was the second longest game in team history - Portland played 17 innings in 2008...With a win tonight, the 'Dogs will have back-to-back home wins for the first time since April 24-25.

COLE TO THE RESCUE: OF Cole Sturgeon made his professional debut as a pitcher, working three scoreless innings of relief in Portland's 6-5, 16-inning win over the Fisher Cats on Thursday...Sturgeon led off the bottom of the 16th with a single and scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch by Cory Burns (L, 2-5)...Sturgeon yielded just one hit, without a walk and stranded two runners in the top of the 15th inning...The 'Dogs trailed 3-0, but scored three 2-out runs in the sixth...In the seventh, Jantzen Witte gave Portland a 5-4 lead with a two-out, 2 RBI single.
