Fisher Cats Drop Heartbreaker, Lose in 16 Innings

PORTLAND, ME - Dalton Pompey went 4-for-8 with a home run and three RBI, but for the second time on the roadtrip, the Fisher Cats dropped a marathon contest. Portland scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 16th for a 6-5 win at Hadlock Field in a game which took five hours and nine minutes to complete.

Cole Sturgeon (1-0), who started in the game in left field, tossed three scoreless innings in relief to earn the win. He also scored the winning run after starting the 16th with a single off losing pitcher Cory Burns (2-5). Sturgeon moved to third on a single by Marco Hernandez. The Fisher Cats intentionally walked Reed Gragnani to load the bases. The wild pitch came with Jantzen Witte at the plate.

The Fisher Cats (37-40) opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. Dwight Smith Jr. singled, moved to second on a single by K. C. Hobson, and to third on a wild pitch. He scored on Jack Murphy's sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.

Pompey homered to lead off the third inning for the Fisher Cats for a 2-0 lead. Roemon Fields would follow with a single, steal second, move to third on a groundout and he scored on a single by Smith Jr.

Portland (29-51) would tie the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Austin Bibens-Dirkx retired the first two batters in the frame, but left the game after a double by Witte and a single by Sam Travis. Carlos Asuaje singled off reliever Luis Perez ahead of a double by Manual Margot as the Sea Dogs tied the game at 3-3.

Pompey put the Fisher Cats back in front of the top of the seventh with an RBI single. Jorge Flores had singled, stole second and scored on Pompey's hit.

The Sea Dogs took the lead for the first time in the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, putting together four singles for two runs. Witte singled off reliever Jimmy Cordero, plating Jake Romanski and Marco Hernandez to make it 5-4 Sea Dogs.

The Fisher Cats tied the game in the top of the ninth inning. Flores walked and was bunted to second by Shane Opitz. Pompey's fourth hit of the game, a grounder off the globe of shortstop Maro Hernandez would up in left field as Flores scored to make it 5-5.

The Fisher Cats conclude the roadtrip in Portland on Friday at 6 p.m. New Hamsphire's starter will be RHP Casey Lawrence (6-8, 5.18) against Portland's RHP Heri Quevedo (0-4, 6.86). Coverage with Bob Lipman begins at 6:45 p.m. on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network and at www.nhfishercats.com.
