Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Binghamton, N.Y. -- The Binghamton Mets (52-37) smacked three homers and pounded out 15 hits, taking the series opener from the Portland Sea Dogs (59-30), 11-4 on Monday night at NYSEG Stadium. The Mets had three, 3-run innings, and produced 23 baserunners.
RHP Cory Mazzoni (1-0) tossed five innings in his season debut, to earn the win for Binghamton. The righty gave up five hits and three runs.
LHP Brian Johnson (7-2) surrendered a career-high seven earned runs over 2.1 IP on eight hits and one homer to suffer the loss.
Travis Taijeron led Binghamton's attack, going 3-for-5 with 2 homers and 4 RBI. Brandon Nimmo added a 3-run shot and Jayce Boyd went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI. T.J Rivera tied a franchise record with three doubles.
Binghamton struck right away, scoring three 2-out runs in the first inning. Rivera knocked home the first run of the series with a double. Boyd followed with a two-run single.
Portland got a run back in the second inning off Mazzoni. David Chester led with a single and moved to third on Michael Almanzar's double. Keury De La Cruz drove home his 15th run with a ground out.
The Mets would respond in a big way, scoring four runs over the next two innings, and knocking Johnson out of the game in the third. The lefty yielded four hits in the third, including a 3-run homer to Taijeron - the final batter he would face. Taijeron hit a solo-homer in the fifth and Nimmo capped off the scoring with a three-run blast off Michael Olmsted in the sixth.
Catcher Mike Brenly went 2-for-4, with 2 RBI and two doubles. Eastern League All-Star Derrik Gibson tripled and delivered a run-scoring double in the ninth.
The Sea Dogs and Mets continue their four-game series with game two, Tuesday night at 6:35 PM from NYSEG Stadium. RHP Mike Augliera (3-7, 5.36) is set to go for the Sea Dogs and he will face RHP Tyler Pill (6-5, 4.12) of the B-Mets. Radio coverage begins at 6:15PM on the WPEI U.S. Cellular Sea Dogs Radio Network.
