Heaps of Hits Help B-Mets in 11-4 Victory

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Mets hammered out 15 hits, including three home runs, in an 11-4 over the Portland Sea Dogs on Monday night at NYSEG Stadium. Travis Taijeron launched two home runs and T.J. Rivera tied a franchise record with three doubles to help the B-Met snap a five-game losing streak against the Sea Dogs. Binghamton moved within seven games of first-place Portland with the victory.

The B-Mets didn't take long to get the offense going against Brian Johnson. Dilson Herrera triggered a one-out single in the first and moved to second on a Brian Burgamy walk. One batter later, Rivera hit the first of his two doubles to bring both runners home. Jayce Boyd plated Rivera with a single to put Binghamton on top 3-0.

Portland got a run back in the top of the second against Cory Mazzoni, making his season debut for Binghamton. Dave Chester laced a lead-off single to left field and advanced to third on the Michael Almanzar double. Keury De La Cruz then grounded out to second base, but Chester scored to make the score 3-1.

The B-Mets got the run right back in the bottom of the frame. Travis Taijeron started the inning with a single. Following another single and a walk he moved to third base with one out. Burgamy grounded into a fielder's choice that brought Taijeron across the plate to bring the lead back to 4-1.

More offense came for the home team in the bottom of the third. With runners on first and second and one out, Taijeron deposited a 1-2 pitch over the left-field wall to extend the Binghamton advantage to 7-1 and knock Johnson from the game.

However, Portland didn't go quietly. In the top of the fourth, Chester singled and Almanzar walked to put two on with nobody out. After Mazzoni got the next two batters out, Michael Brenly tacked a two-run double to left field to cut the Binghamton lead back to four, 7-3.

The B-Mets took control from there, though. In the bottom of the fifth, Taijeron hit his second long ball of the game, this one off Jeremy Kehrt, to put Binghamton up five runs again, 8-3. It's the seventh multi-home run game of the season for B-Met player.

The offense blew the game open in the sixth against Michael Olmstead. Rivera doubled with one out and Boyd walked to put two on for Brandon Nimmo. The center fielder launched a home run to left field, his third of the season, and Binghamton went up 11-3.

The Sea Dogs got one run back against Jon Velasquez in the ninth thanks to two doubles. Derrik Gibson drove in Brenly, but was stranded at second as Velasquez go the final out to nail down the 11-4 victory.

Mazzoni (1-0) allowed three runs in in five innings in his third professional start of the season. Johnson (7-2) gave up a season-high seven run in 2-1/3 frames. Randy Fotanez held the Sea Dogs at bay with three scoreless innings of relief. Velasquez let the one blemish past in the ninth, but nothing more to secure the win.

The B-Mets (52-37) play game two of this four-game set against Portland on Tuesday at 6:35 PM.
