Akron RubberDucks News Release
(Akron, Oh.) July 7, 2014 - Rosters for the annual Eastern League All-Star Game were announced by the EL office on Monday afternoon, and three Akron RubberDucks players have been honored with spots on the Western Division squad.
The game will be played on Wednesday, July 16th in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
Shortstop Francisco Lindor, and righthanded pitchers Joe Colon and Shawn Armstrong will represent the RubberDucks and their major league parent-club, the Cleveland Indians, in the mid-season classic between the top players from each of the league's two divisions. Lindor and Colon were added to the roster through fan voting, while Armstrong was chosen by the league's managers and media personnel.
Armstrong, 23, is the closer for the RubberDucks, and ranks tied for fifth in the EL with 11 saves. The flame-throwing righthander out of East Carolina University has converted 11 of his 14 save opportunities. He has appeared in 30 games, going 1-1, with a sparkling 1.83 ERA. In 34 1/3 innings, Armstrong has fanned 43 hitters. He has held opposing hitters to a collective .218 batting average, and sports a WHIP of 1.14. He is currently on a streak of five successful save chances in a row. The Indians acquired Armstrong with an 18th round pick in 2011.
Colon, 24, has emerged as the staff ace for the RubberDucks in his first Double-A season. He is currently 8-4, with a 2.63 ERA in 17 starts. His ERA ranks second in the league behind LHP Henry Owens of Portland. In 99 1/3 innings, Colon has 68 strikeouts and 35 walks. He was named the EL Pitcher of the Week on June 2nd, after a sensational week that included a nine-inning, complete-game, three-hit shutout in a 9-0 win over the Reading Fightins at Canal Park on May 26th . It was the first complete game and shutout of his career. He has won his last three decisions. Colon was a 12th round pick in the 2009 draft out of Caguas, Puerto Rico.
Lindor, 20, is hitting .279, with six homers and 44 RBI. He leads the team with 20 stolen bases. Regarded by many as the top overall prospect in minor league baseball, Lindor has been a mainstay in the RubberDucks lineup all season. Among his season highlights, are a grand slam homer at home against Altoona on May 8th, and a walk-off homer against Bowie on April 11th . Lindor is also scheduled to play for the World Team in the Major League Baseball Futures game in Minneapolis on July 13th . Lindor was the Indians' top pick in the 2011 draft out of Montverde (FL) High School.
The EL All-Star Game will take place at People's Natural Gas Field in Altoona, home of the Altoona Curve, on Wednesday, July 16th at 7 p.m. Online broadcasts of the game will be available on MiLB.tv, and via TuneIn Radio on www.milb.com.
The Akron RubberDucks are the Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. The 2014 season is the 18th since moving to Canal Park and the first as the RubberDucks.
