Sea Dogs Fall 2-1 to Somerset on Friday

Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs (26-29, 66-59) drop fifth straight with 2-1 loss to the Somerset Patriots (34-21, 76-47) on Friday night.

Tyler McDonough hit his fourth triple of the season after going two-for-four with a stolen base and a run scored. Alex Erro caught three Patriots stealing in his fifth start catching at the Double-A level. Sterling Sharp fired 3.1 innings to start with four strikeouts before Wyatt Olds, Theo Denlinger, and Dylan Spacke combined for 5.2 scoreless innings in relief.

Mickey Gasper hit an RBI single in the top of the fourth to break up the pitcher's duel and put Somerset on the board 1-0. A second run scored after a sacrifice fly to center field from Jeisson Rosario making it 2-0 Patriots.

Nathan Hickey put Portland on the board in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single to score Tyler McDonough who reached on his fourth triple of the season. Hickey cut the lead in half bringing the score to 2-1.

Somerset starter RHP Matt Sauer (4-3, 3.68 ERA) earned the win after pitching 6.2 innings allowing one run on three hits while striking out eleven. He did not issue a walk. Josh Maciewjewski (1) was awarded the save after pitching 2.1 shutout innings with two strikeouts. He did not issue a walk. The loss was issued to Portland starter RHP Sterling Sharp (3-5, 5.47 ERA) after pitching 3.1 innings allowing two runs on four hits while walking two and striking four.

The Sea Dogs return to Hadlock Field tomorrow, September 2nd, 2023 for game five of a six-game series against the Somerset Patriots. First pitch for game five is slated for 1:00pm. Portland will start RHP Wikelman Gonzalez (2-1, 2.88 ERA) while Somerset will give the ball to RHP Blane Abeyta (8-6, 5.68 ERA).
