Hamel Twirls Gem, Ponies Hold On For Fourth-Straight Win Over Harrisburg

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Dom Hamel started and tossed a gem, as the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (30-23, 65-57) held on late to defeat the Harrisburg Senators, 6-5, on Friday night at Mirabito Stadium. The Ponies have taken the first four games from Harrisburg to claim the series victory and have now won five-straight games overall.

Hamel (8-6) struck out a career-high-tying 11 batters over six scoreless innings of work. He allowed just three hits and two walks. With two runners in scoring position in the sixth inning and the Ponies up 1-0, Hamel struck out Terone Harris III on a high fastball to end his night and keep Harrisburg off the scoreboard.

Hamel has struck out a career-high 11 batters on three separate occasions this season: July 5 at Portland, July 26 at Reading, and September 1 against Harrisburg. The 24-year-old right-hander now leads the Eastern League with 147 strikeouts this year.

The Ponies grabbed the lead in the second inning on a solo home run from Agustin Ruiz. It was Ruiz's team-leading 18th home run of the season.

In the seventh inning, the Ponies put up a five-spot to grab a 6-0 lead. The inning was highlighted by a solo homer from Matt O'Neill, sacrifice fly from Kevin Parada, a two-run single from JT Schwartz on the 12th pitch of the at-bat, and an RBI double from Jeremiah Jackson.

Harrisburg (24-31, 55-68) crawled back into the game in the top of the eighth with a five-spot of its own. The inning was highlighted by a two-run double from Dylan Crews, an RBI from Terone Harris III, an RBI walk from Murphy Stehly, and a sacrifice fly from Lucius Fox.

The Ponies held on, as Junior Santos stranded two runners on base in the eighth and one in the ninth to earn his third save.

Binghamton continues its series with the Senators at Mirabito Stadium on Saturday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:07 p.m. and pregame coverage will begin at 5:50 p.m. on the WNBF Rumble Ponies Radio Network.

Postgame Notes: Binghamton has won 11 of its last 13 games...Schwartz recorded his fifth three-hit game and 14th multi-RBI game with the Rumble Ponies...Luisangel Acuña had his seventh multi-hit game with Binghamton and scored a run...O'Neill's home run was his sixth of the season...Eight batters in the Ponies' lineup recorded at least one hit...Hamel (11), Daniel Juarez (2), and Santos (2) combined to strike out 15 batters and issue just four walks...Over the last three games, Ponies' pitching has combined for 39 strikeouts and just six walks.
