
Sea Dogs Announce Team Awards

Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs, Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, presented their annual team awards for the 2006 season prior to today's regular season finale. The team awards are voted on by the fans and made possible by Irving Oil and Creative Awards. The team awards are handed out in four different categories: Most Valuable Player, Pitcher of the Year, 10th Player Award and Citizen of the Year. The winners of each category are as followed:
- Most Valuable Player: Brandon Moss
- Pitcher of the Year: Devern Hansack
- 10th Player Award: Barry Hertzler
- Citizen of the Year: Keoni De Renne
Most Valuable Player - Brandon Moss
Outfielder Brandon Moss got off to a slow start in 2006 hitting .178 in April. Moss rebounded and hit .352 in June and .327 in August. On the season Moss is hitting .285. His 36 doubles leads the Eastern League and is a new single season Sea Dogs record. He ranks second in the league in hits with 144 and RBI's with 83, his 76 runs scored ranks fifth in the league. He was also selected as the Allied Home Mortgage Big Dog of the Year recipient having won 14 player of the game awards throughout the 2006 season. The 22-year-old, was selected by the Red Sox in the eighth round of the June 2002 draft. He is a member of the Red Sox 40-man roster.
Pitcher of the Year - Devern Hansack
Right-handed pitcher Devern Hansack has posted an 8-7 record with one save in 2006. His 3.26 ERA ranks sixth in the Eastern League. He has a team high 124 strikeouts and has walked 36 batters in 132.1 innings pitched. Hansack has served both as a starter and a reliever for the Sea Dogs this season. In his most recent outing on August 31st at Binghamton he tossed seven scoreless innings of one hit ball while striking out a team high 12 batters. Hansack was signed as a minor league free agent in December 2005, after Playing Winter Ball in his native Nicaragua where he lead the league in strikeouts with 89.
10th Player Award - Barry Hertzler
Right-handed pitcher Barry Hertzler began this season in the Portland bullpen, after spending much of the summer at Triple-A Pawtucket, he returned to the Sea Dogs in August and helped stabilize the Portland bullpen. Hertzler appeared in 16 games for Sea Dogs this season before being called up to Triple-A Pawtucket, posting no record with four saves and a 1.05 ERA. Hertzler was dominant in April posting a 0.59 ERA with 11 strikeouts. Since returning to the Sea Dogs on August 15th Hertzler has continued his command over opponents, recording a save and a 0.00 ERA. In 24 games with the Sea Dogs this season, Hertzler has allowed a run to score in only four games, each time a single run, the last coming on May 16th. He has a 15 inning scoreless streak over his last 11 games. Hertzler has yet to allow a run to score at Hadlock Field this season. This season at Double-A Portland Hertzler is 0-0 with 5 saves and 0.74 ERA. The 25 year-old was drafted by the Red Sox in the 11th round of the June 2003 draft.
Citizen of the Year - Keoni De Renne
Infielder Keoni De Renne a Hawaii native enters his sixth year of professional baseball, his first within the Red Sox organization. Keoni wasted no time becoming familiar with the fans and the state of Maine. De Renne frequently volunteered for school appearances, clinics and camp visits. During these visits and clinics he shared his experience with fans about life as a baseball player, the importance of education and teamwork. During the home games this season De Renne was consistently available to sign autographs both before and after the game. De Renne also made himself available to radio stations in the area to help promote the Sea Dogs in the community. De Renne has a truly infectious love for baseball and life. His constant efforts to share this love with the community and fans makes him a welcome addition to the Sea Dogs organization both on and off the field.
The Portland Sea Dogs congratulate all of our 2006 Team Award Winners and thank the fans who took the time to select the recipients. The Sea Dogs look to clinch a playoff spot this afternoon; a Portland win or a Binghamton loss sends Portland to the post-season. The Eastern League playoff get underway on Wednesday, September 6th.
