Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine - The Portland Sea Dogs, Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, clinched their second straight playoff berth Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field. While the Sea Dogs were in the third inning with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, the Binghamton Mets lost 2-0 to the Connecticut Defenders clinching the final playoff spot for the Portland Sea Dogs. As a result, the second game of today's scheduled doubleheader between the Sea Dogs and Fisher Cats has been cancelled as the game no longer has playoff implications. For the second straight year the Sea Dogs will face the Trenton Thunder (Yankees) in the first round of the Eastern League playoffs. Last year Portland prevailed three game to two.
The top two teams from each division qualify for post-season play. The Trenton Thunder have clinched first place in the Northern Division, while Portland has a lock on the second spot. In the Southern Division the defending Eastern League Champion Akron Aeros (Indians) have secured first place and for the second consecutive year will face the Altoona Curve (Pirates) in the first round of the playoffs.
The first round of the Eastern League playoffs is a best out of five series scheduled to get underway on Wednesday, September 6th. Games one, two and five (if necessary) will be played in Trenton, New Jersey. While the Sea Dogs will host games three and four (if necessary). Games three and four are scheduled to be played at Hadlock Field on Friday, September 8th and Saturday, September 9th at 6:00 PM.
The two division series winners will square off in a best of five series for the Eastern League Championship Series. Should the Sea Dogs advance to the Championship series, the Sea Dogs would host games three, four (if necessary), and five (if necessary) at Hadlock Field. While games one and two would be played at the home of the Southern Division Champion.
Tickets for the Eastern League Playoffs are available and can be purchased by calling the Sea Dogs ticket Office at 207-879-9500. Playoff tickets are priced the same as regular season tickets and range between $3.00 and $8.00.
