Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

Binghamton Mets starting pitchers Kevin Mulvey and Philip Humber combined to allow one earned run over 12 innings, as the B-Mets split a season-ending doubleheader with the Connecticut Defenders, losing Game One 2-0 while winning the second contest 4-1 at Dodd Stadium Monday. The B-Mets end the 2006 season with a record of 70-70, good for third place in the EL North.

In Game One, Connecticut (64-77) went ahead in the first, when Quincy Foster reached on an infield single, moved to second on a throwing error by Mulvey and scored on Brian Buscher's base hit to right. The Defenders tacked on another in the third when Jake Wald reached on an error before eventually scoring on another error.

Those unearned runs would be the only runs allowed by Mulvey (0-1), who gave up four hits over six innings, suffering the complete game loss. Connecticut's Geno Espineli (8-7) also went the distance, striking out seven.

In the second contest, Humber retired 18 of the 20 to face him, allowing only a pair of singles to Quincy Foster, the first of which came leading off the fourth. Foster then stole second and third before coming home on a throwing error for a 1-0 Connecticut lead.

However, the B-Mets rallied in the sixth to get Humber (2-2) off the hook. After Chase Lambin tied the score with a solo shot to right, Binghamton loaded the bases against James Garcia (3-8) on singles by Jorge Padilla and Michel Abreu and a walk drawn by Ambiorix Conecpion before Mike Nickeas singled home Padilla and Concepcion. Jay Caligiuri added a pinch-hit homer in the seventh for the final margin of victory.

Humber didn't walk a batter in six innings of work, striking out four. Matt Lindstrom got the final three outs for his 11th save in 12 chances.

The B-Mets open the 2007 season on Thursday, April 5th at Akron and play their home opener Thursday, April 12th against the Portland Sea Dogs.
