Scrappers Take Hard-Luck Loss

July 19, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release

It was a pitcher's dual on Sunday night at Bowman Field in Williamsport, as the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (10-18) dropped the second game of a three-game set to the Williamsport Crosscutters (21-8) by a final of 1-0.

The Cutters have outscored the Scrappers 12-11 in the season series, and Leandro Linares put the Scrappers in a position to win. Linares had by far his best start of the season. Linares went five innings giving up three hits and one run, while striking out four. He did not walk anybody, which is a bonus for him. He entered the game with the most walks given up in the New York-Penn League.

The Scrapper bats had nothing going for them on Sunday. Luke Leftwich gave up three hits in five innings without giving up any runs. Neither side could really get runners on base. Mahoning Valley left four runners on, and was 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position. Williamsport left five runners on and was 1-for-4 with runners in scoring position.

Leftwich (1-0) earned the win, while Linares (0-4) took a tough loss. The rubber match of this series is on Monday night at 7:05. Denton Keys gets the ball for the Cutters, while Shao-Ching Chiang takes the hill for the Scrappers.
