Staten Island Yankees News Release

The Staten Island Yankees (17-11) defeated the Lowell Spinners (16-13) in dramatic fashion by a score of 4-3 on a hot day in Staten Island.

Lowell got on the board first in the top of fourth inning when Andrew Benintendi hit a solo home run to right center field. Benintendi was the Boston Red Sox seventh overall pick in the 2015 First-Year Player Draft.

The Spinners tacked on another run in the fourth inning to grab a 2-0 lead. Catcher Jhon Nunez singled to right field and then advanced to third base on a Chad De La Guerra single. Nunez came around to score when Josh Ockimey grounded out to first base.

The Yankees tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth. Kyle Holder drove in both Ryan Krill and Junior Valera with a two-RBI triple. Krill reached on a hit-by-pitch and Valera collected a bunt single.

The ball continued to fly out of the ballpark when Drew Bridges hit his third home run of the season in the sixth inning to put the Yankees up by one.

The Spinners started a rally in the eighth inning. Victor Acosta started it off with a single to right field, made it to second base on a wild pitch by Yankees pitcher Bret Marks, and reached third base on a throwing error by catcher Eduardo de Oleo. After walking Nunez, De La Guerra brought home Acosta for the tying run on a sacrifice fly to right field.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Zack Zehner sent Yankees fans home in style with a walk-off home run. It was a line drive that cleared the left field wall and gave Staten Island a 4-3 victory. Zehner homered for the second day in a row.

Matt Borens started on the mound for the Yankees throwing 4.2 innings of two-run ball, giving up five hits, one walk, and striking out two. Jonny Drozd gave Staten Island distance, pitching 2.2 innings without giving up a run. Bret Marks gave up the tying run in the eighth on De La Guerra's sacrifice fly. Michael Schaub (W, 2-0) received the win after pitching a scoreless ninth inning striking out two.

The Yankees will look to complete the sweep of the Spinners tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at Richmond County Bank Ball Park for "Big Money Monday".
