State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA - Leobaldo Pina produced three hits for the State College Spikes, but a four-run third from the Batavia Muckdogs was too much to overcome as the Spikes dropped a 5-2 decision on Sunday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Pina delivered his third game with three or more hits on the season, with a trio of singles and a run scored. The Spikes (14-14) were held without an extra-base hit among their six knocks, but brought the tying run to the plate in the sixth and eighth innings.
However, the Muckdogs' (9-19) early outburst proved to be the deciding factor in the game. Brad Haynal's bases-loaded single plated the game's first run, and Korey Dunbar followed with a two-run double one batter later. Eric Fisher's sacrifice fly completed the scoring in the inning and staked Batavia to a 4-0 lead.
State College scratched out a run in the fifth on Craig Aikin's RBI single to bring in Jose Godoy, and another in the sixth when Pina came home on Cole Lankford's single to the right side. The Spikes would not be able to produce anything further, though, while the Muckdogs added a run in the eighth on Brandon Rawe's base hit through the hole at second base to widen the gap.
Starter Landon Beck (2-2) took the loss for the Spikes after allowing four runs on a total of seven hits and three walks. Beck had walked just three batters on the season entering the game. The righty added two strikeouts in the effort.
Batavia starter Cody Poteet gave up just one hits and struck out six batters over his first four innings, but his outing ended there after reaching his pitch limit. Jordan Hillyer (1-1), the second reliever for the Muckdogs, earned credit for the win after 1 2/3 scoreless innings in which he yielded two hits and a walk while striking out one. Steve Farnworth (4) picked up the win after retiring the last five batters in order, one via strikeout.
Haynal, Dunbar, Alexander Fernandez and Giovanny Alfonzo all produced multiple hits for Batavia.
Catcher Jose Godoy recorded a pair of pickoffs for the Spikes from behind the plate, nabbing a runner off second in the opening and a runner off first in the second. Godoy also threw out two runners trying to steal.
The Spikes and Muckdogs will now meet in the rubber match of the three-game series on Monday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Right-hander Carson Cross (1-1) gets the start for State College, while left-hander Justin Jacome (0-0) will go to the hill for Batavia.
