Lowell Spinners News Release

STATEN ISLAND, NY - For the third straight evening, the Lowell Spinners saw a game slip away in the late innings, as Staten Island left fielder Zack Zehner hit the first pitch of the bottom of the ninth over the left field wall, sending Lowell to a 4-3 defeat.

It was the team's third loss in a row and dropped their lead in the Stedler Division to a half-game, as the Tri-City ValleyCats were rained out.

Lowell (16-13), after seeing nine straight batters retired after putting runners on first and second in the first inning, jumped ahead in the fourth as Andrew Benintendi launched his second homerun of the season, all on the road, over the right field wall.

After a strikeout, Jhon Nunez and Chad De La Guerra hit back-to-back singles and both advanced an extra base on heads-up baserunning, as the throw in from the outfield came in late. Josh Ockimey grounded out to first to knock in Nunez with the second run.

Staten Island (17-11) tied the game in the fifth inning on a two-run triple by shortstop Kyle Holder, and one inning later, third baseman Drew Bridges put the Yankees ahead with a solo homerun off of reliever Enfember Martinez.

The Spinners scratched together a run in the eighth to tie the game as Victor Acosta walked with one out, moved to third on a wild pitch and a throwing error by the Yankee catcher, and then trotted home on a sacrifice fly by De La Guerra.

Lowell starter Jake Cosart rebounded from his last start, a tough outing on Monday in which he could not make it out of the third inning, and battled through five innings, allowing two runs on five hits with two punchouts. Martinez retired every batter he faced except one in three innings of relief, while Bobby Poyner (0-1, 3.60) picked up the loss with his one-pitch ninth inning.

Nunez and Jeremy Rivera led the team with two-hit nights while De La Guerra extended his hitting streak to six games.

The Spinners look to salvage a game tomorrow as Jose Almonte (2-1, 3.91) gets the ball. First pitch is scheduled for 7 pm. Listen live on WCAP 980 AM.
