
Lake Monsters Fall 7-1 At Brooklyn On Sunday

BROOKLYN, NY --- Vinny Siena and Michael Bernal each collected three hits, while Gaby Almonte allowed one run over 6 1/3 innings to lead the Brooklyn Cyclones to a 7-1 win over the Vermont Lake Monsters in New York-Penn League action Sunday evening at MCU Park.
The Cyclones took a 3-0 lead with single runs in the first, second and fifth innings, including RBI singles from Siena and Hengelbert Rojas. Vermont got its only run of the game in the seventh on a Mikey White leadoff double and Nick Collins one-out RBI single to center to cut the deficit to 3-1, but Skye Bolt followed by grounding into one of three Lake Monsters double plays in the game.
Brooklyn then got a pair of insurance runs in both the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings off Vermont reliever Evan Manarino asRojas gave the Cyclones a 5-1 lead with a two-out, two-run single in the seventh and Bernal added a two-out, two-run double in the eighth for the six-run advantage.
Almonte (3-2) allowed one run on five hits with no walks and five strikeouts over his 6 1/3 innings for the win, while relievers Carlos Valdez and Nicco Blank combined for 2 2/3 hitless innings with two strikeouts. Vermont starter Heath Bowers (1-1) took the loss despite allowing just one unearned run on one hit in the first inning, his only inning of work after throwing 39 pitches. Reliever Jared Lyons also gave up an unearned run on two hits with two strikeouts over two innings.
With the leadoff double in the seventh, White extended his hitting streak to 16 straight games. The 16-game hit streak is the longest of the season in the New York-Penn League and the sixth longest all-time in Vermont history.
Vermont, which is now 12-16 overall, will look to finish 3-3 on the six-game roadtrip when they close out the series at Brooklyn on Monday morning at 11:30 am. The Lake Monsters then return to historic Centennial Field on Tuesday night to begin a six-game homestand against the Auburn Doubledays and Connecticut Tigers.
