Scott Kelley, early scoring lead Otters to 4-1

(NORMAL, Illinois) - The Evansville Otters scored early and held on to the late lead for a 4-1 win against the Normal CornBelters on Saturday night.

Evansville pitcher Scott Kelley allowed just one unearned run in seven innings as the Otters offense started the scoring in the second inning. With a pair of runners on base, catcher Brett Chamberlain dropped down a bunt but pitcher Tyler Lavigne threw the ball wildly to third base. Right fielder Troy Frazier scored on the error as Evansville leapt ahead 1-0.

The Otters then rallied for more runs in the next inning as first baseman Jon Waltenbury, catcher Brett Chamberlain, and infielder Joe Spiers all had RBI singles.

Down 4-0, the Normal CornBelters struggled to score against Scott Kelley who allowed just one run (unearned) in the fifth inning.

Normal brought the tying run to the plate in the eighth inning, but reliever Josh Cephas got designated hitter Colin Moro to ground out. Eric Massingham pitched a scoreless ninth inning for Evansville as the Otters maintained the 4-1 lead for the win.

The Evansville Otters improve to 6-21 with the victory as the Normal CornBelters fall to 16-11 following the loss.

Kelley improves to 1-3 after striking out seven batters during the win as Tyler Lavigne (2-4) takes the loss after allowing four unearned runs. Massingham also picked up his third save of the season.

The Otters return home tonight to begin a three-game series against the River City Rascals. Sunday will feature a doubleheader between the two teams with a 4:35 p.m. first pitch. The team's will then conclude the series on Monday with an afternoon 12:05 p.m. game.
