Beach Bums hang on for win

TRAVERSE CITY, MI- The Traverse City Beach Bums pitched out of a huge jam in the ninth inning and beat the Joliet Slammers in the final game of their three-game series front of 3,317 fans at Wuerfel Park by a score of 4-3.

The Slammers opened the scoring in the third inning when shortstop Brad Netzel launched a two-run home run to left field, giving Joliet a 2-0 lead. The Beach Bums came right back to tie the game on an RBI-double from right fielder Matt Brown and a run-scoring ground-rule double from second baseman James Guerrero, tying the game at two.

The Beach Bums then took the lead in the fifth inning when left fielder J.T. Hall drove home center fielder Zack Pace with an RBI-groundout. First baseman Chase Burch followed with an RBI-single off the wall in left field to give Traverser City a 4-2 lead.

In the ninth, Beach Bums relief pitcher Scott Mueller allowed a run before stranding runners at second and third base with less than two outs to end the ballgame. The Traverse City closer struck out Joliet pinch-hitter Yasel Gutierrez with one out, then got center fielder Bobby Leeper to groundout to end the ballgame.

Beach Bums starting pitcher Bryan Banes (3-0) picked up his third win after allowing only two runs in six innings on the mound. Slammers starting pitcher Billy Petrick (1-5) pitched six innings allowing four runs on eight hits in suffering his fifth loss of the season. The Beach Bums improve to 13-14 with the loss, while Joliet falls to 13-13 in 2011.

The Beach Bums host the Washington Wild Things on Family Funday Sunday at 5:05 p.m. Spencer Shelton gets the start for the Beach Bums. Right hander Justin Edwards gets the start for the Wild Things.
