Normal CornBelters News Release

The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, fell short of sweeping their second straight series and saw their win streak end at five games on Saturday night at the Corn Crib by falling to the Evansville Otters 4-1. All four Otters runs were unearned.

The Otters struck first with an unearned run in the second when Troy Frazier reached via an error and moved to second on a walk, then scored when the throw to retire him on a bunt at third went into the Otters bullpen.

Evansville scored three more unearned runs in the third inning. With one out, Greg Alexander reached on an error, and with two outs, four straight Otters singled to score three runs to increase the lead to 4-0.

The CornBelters got on the board in the fifth. Alvaro Ramirez beat out a high chopper in front of the plate and moved to third on an errant pickoff throw, then scored on a ground out to cut the margin to 4-1.

Normal stranded runners at third in the sixth, first in the seventh and the corners in the eighth. The 'Belters put the leadoff hitter on base in the ninth when Mike Mobbs was hit by a pitch, but could not advance a runner to second before the game ended.

Scott Kelley recorded his first win to improve to 1-3 in a seven-inning performance. Tyler Lavigne gave up nine hits in seven innings to take the loss and fall to 2-4.

The CornBelters begin a three-game series against the Gateway Grizzlies at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Corn Crib. Bobby Pritchett (2-1, 4.36) is the scheduled starter for the CornBelters, facing fellow right-hander Brad Stone for the Grizzlies. Pre-game on WEZC-FM 95.9 and WJBC.com is at 5:50.
