Joliet Slammers News Release
Last Time Out...
The Joliet Slammers (13-12) took a 6-0 lead and survived a furious Traverse City Beach Bums (12-14) rally to win by a score of 7-4 Friday night. They scored three runs in the first inning Brad Netzel hit a RBI single to score Bobby Leeper who'd walked. After Josh Flores doubled, Erik Lis singled in Netzel and Flores to make it 3-0. Joliet added another run in the second on a Leeper sacrifice fly. Meanwhile Kevin Crimmel was excellent as he went six innings and gave up only two runs, neither of which were earned. Netzel singled in the fifth with two outs and Josh Flores hit his second home run of the season to make it 6-0. Traverse City tried to come back but they never got that close as Aaron Dott and Ryan Quigley shut things down in the eighth and ninth innings respectively. For Quigley it was his seventh save of the season as he returned to the Slammers in style
For Starters...
Billy Petrick is coming off another solid outing where he simply did not get any run support. He went 6.1 innings, giving up three runs against Evansville, but suffered a 3-2 defeat. The Slammers have scored a combined five runs in three of Petrick's four losses this season. Loyal Cubs fans might remember Petrick. He played for them just four years ago. The 26-year old from Morris, Illinois was selected by Chicago in the third round of the 2002 Amateur Draft. Petrick made a big splash in 2007. He started the year in Daytona and after six strong games was promoted to Double-A Tennessee. With the Smokies he was 1-1 with a 2.37 ERA in 18 games before moving up to the Iowa Cubs. After only nine games with Iowa, Petrick got the call every player dreams of hearing: he was going to "The Show." Petrick stepped on the mound for the first time at baseball's highest level on June 27, 2007 at Wrigley Field against the Colorado Rockies. He held opponents scoreless in five out of eight appearances. Since his time with the Cubs, Petrick spent 2008 with Daytona before being granted free agency. He pitched effectively for the Windy City Thunderbolts in 2009 until surgery ended his season. After a short stint with the Jackhammers last year, Petrick is ready to go with the Slammers.
Pitching is the key...
It's no secret that the Slammers' pitching staff has carried the team through the early part of 2011. Their ERA sits at 3.58, tied for 3rd in the Frontier League. Opponents are only hitting .239 against the Slammers, second lowest in the League.
Netzel hitting in bunches...
Despite not joining the team until May 29, Kankakee native Brad Netzel already leads the team in multi-hit games with seven. He's been especially hot recently, compiling multi-hit games in five out of the last six contests. Netzel's .328 batting average is tops on the team and he's been clutch, going 9-18 with men in scoring position.
Catch me if you can...
Slammers' catchers have not allowed a passed ball this season, the only team in the Frontier League who can say that. In addition, Ben Hewett has thrown out 50 percent (8-16) of all runners trying to steal.
We're going streaking!
Josh Flores has reached base in all 16 games he's played this year.
Five is the magic number...
The Slammers are 11-1 when scoring five or more runs in a game. They are 2-11 when scoring fewer than five runs.
Transaction Wire...
OF Thomas Creal was activated from the DL and released yesterday. RHP Ryan Quigley was signed after failing his physical with the Washington Nationals' organization. The Slammers signed outfielder John Wagle Wednesday.
