Scoma Extra Good in Goldeyes Win
May 28, 2013 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Mark Hardy got off to a tough start on Tuesday night. But it's not how you start, it's how you finish.
Despite giving up two runs in the first inning, Hardy went on to pitch seven-and-a-third and his teammates picked him up, as the Goldeyes came from behind to beat the Laredo Lemurs 4-3 in front of 6,343 onlookers at Shaw Park.
With the win, Winnipeg improved to 10-2 on the season and moved 2.5 games up on the second place St. Paul Saints in the American Association's North Division. Laredo fell to 10-2 and stayed six games ahead of second-place Amarillo in the race for first in the South Division.
Ryan Scoma was the offensive hero for the Goldeyes. The right fielder, who came into the game hitting .360, hit a two-run double that tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth inning and then he scored the winning run two batters later as Amos Ramon singled him home.
"I was just looking for a pitch to handle," Scoma told Mitch Clinton on the Shaw TV post-game show. "I just wanted something in the zone that I could drive. I got the pitch, but it wouldn't have mattered if there hadn't been anyone on base. I kind of owe it to my teammates (Tim Smith and Luis Alen) because you can't drive in runs without people on base."
Laredo opened the scoring in the first as a single by clean-up hitter John Allen drove home Marcos Rodriguez and Jimmy Mojica with the first two runs of the game.
Laredo made it 3-0 in the third when Mojica scored on a passed ball.
But the Goldeyes scored one in the fourth as Josh Mazzola scored on a throwing error by Laredo's Mike Sheridan and then Winnipeg added three in the sixth on Scoma's double and Ramon's single.
The Goldeyes scored four runs on 12 hits as five Winnipeg batters had two-hit games - Fehlandt Lentini, Mazzola, Smith, Alen and Scoma. Mazzola, Smith, Alen and Scoma scored the Goldeyes' runs.
Hardy (3-0, 1.37 ERA) was the winner, while Patrick Keating picked up his fifth save. Mark Serrano (3-1, 2.49 ERA), who pitched all eight innings for Laredo, suffered the loss.
The Goldeyes and Lemurs go at it again on Wednesday morning at 11 at Shaw Park as righthander Justin Garcia (2-0, 2.13 ERA) will get the start for Winnipeg. Laredo's starter has yet to be determined.
