Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts (6-5) beat the Amarillo Sox (4-7) 13-2 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Monday night.
Wichita plated six runs in the bottom of the first inning in support of starting pitcher Jon Link and never looked back. Eight of Wichita's 13 runs were scored with two outs. Eight different Wingnuts had at least one hit and scored at least one run. Wichita totaled 16 hits on the night.
Ryan Khoury and Jake Kahaulelio drew back-to-back walks to start the bottom of the first before executing a double steal of second and third. John Rodriguez drove in Khoury with the game's first run on a groundout to second base. C.J. Ziegler made it 2-0 on a line drive single to left that scored Kahaulelio.
After Derek Perren flied out to right, Abel Nieves sliced a double down the right field line that chased Ziegler to third. The double was Nieves' 500th career base hit. Stephen Yoo singled on a line drive to center field to make it 4-0. David Amberson followed with an infield single to shortstop. Yoo scored while Amberson went to second base when K.C. Serna's throw to first bounced into foul territory. Jared McDonald capped the inning with a double to right-center that ushered in Amberson.
The Sox scored their only two runs of the game in the top of the second with two outs. Serna lined a single to center to score Joe Weik from second. Serna stole second base and then scored on Joe Anthonsen's RBI double to left-center.
Wichita grabbed the runs right back in the bottom of the second. With second and third and two outs, Nieves singled on a sharp groundball up the middle to make it 8-2.
Ziegler stretched the lead to 9-2 with a line drive, solo home run in the bottom of the fourth.
The wingnuts added four more runs in the fifth. Yoo led off with a single to center and went to third two batters later on McDonald's second double of the night. Khoury hit a two-run double to center that brought in Yoo and McDonald. John Rodriguez finished the inning with a two-out, two-run home run to left-center. Rodriguez has homered in three consecutive games and has hit safely in seven straight.
